Plant City is a 4 plus hour drive for me but I have emailed him to check into training.  Also, I've heard the name Gottlieb - any info for me on this person?

I have no problem traveling a bit - even would consider staying for a week or two in the RV if necessary.  That's why I want out of S Florida, can't get out of the state in less than 6 hours from here - hit with 3 hurricanes and refused to be foolish enough to get caught on the highway trying evacuate.  New home in near future in middle Tennessee - see lots of clubs around us there.

If I were anywhere in the same state as Ivan, I would go see him as often as I possibly could.

I have seen him in GSD Review I believe - I will follow up - he looks to be in Europe doing seminars for the summer - are his staff as good?

Rezkat5 - another question for you....  regarding pricing.  I have my pups listed for $1,500 which as I have read in several threads - is asking alot.  I have checked with other breeders in the area and also litters advertised in my area and seem to be in line with them.  I am more interested in selling only to people who are able to properly care for the dog, which is where my line of thinking was.  Another issue in 'Palm Beach' is that people equate price with quality and many compare the cheaper dogs to lesser dogs.  Thankfully we don't need the money (not rich but not poor) but felt I could weed out those who "just want a gsd".  I am also willing to consider reasonable offers to buyers I consider qualified.

I have also wanted to find a way to donate a pup to a good cause (service work).  Is there a line of training for things like SARS, etc which also titles the dogs?  I have a hard time finding info in this area of training and needs.

That's a tough one, but IMO that is a bit too high.  I did not pay that much for any of my dogs and one was an import.  :)  Even with the shipping it was not that much.

This is one search and rescue organization that I found in Florida just by a quick search.  Maybe contact them and see if there are any handlers that are looking for a new pup to start.   Given the lines on your dogs, I could see a Police Department possibly being interesed too.

How far south are you?

by clewsk9s on 31 July 2007 - 17:07

Policemom - we're in Palm Beach County, northern part currently, but plan on moving back to central county in next few months.  Where are you?

Rezkat5 - thanks for the info - will look into dropping the price but don't want to give away the pups, unfortunately breeders in my area tend to ask more for pups than other areas of the country probably cuz it costs so darn much to live here!  Property tax & insurance last year alone were almost $10K - it's gone nuts after 3 hurricane hits - lucky to even have HO insurance these days.  1/4 acre lots in my neighborhood sell for $120,000 - only enough room for 2 dogs max!  Others may think they could put 5-7 dogs on a 1/2 acre but I think they would be nuts!  Want to keep them healthy and happy.

Really just want to keep them out of the hands of people who aren't dedicated owners - lots of them around here and the price tends to weed them out.  Just spent $650 on initial vet vist, 1st shots and exams for 9 pups - is that reasonable in your area?  Also keeping pups on Canidae & raw meat freeze dried sprinkles.
