Are you having drought conditions in your area? That could explain why they are gathering around the poop (drinking liquid from it) and in the water bucket, or drinking from the patio stone. Doesn't explain why they're just in the ONE water bucket, though!
Very strange...in my experience, these bees do not get aggresive unless you are near their nest. Bumblebees form larger colonies, and are more likely to be underground, or under buildings. I've only ever been stung when I tried to move the wooden structure (silo top that had blown off the silo) they were nesting under.

thx for the links
these are about 1 1/2 cm in length, the carpenter bees I have seen before were about 4cm in length.
I don't think they had hairy butts, not from the picture at least. I bet that one puppy has 30 stings, and yes ,he has been moved someplace else.
gsdfanatic1964-what size are your bees?

Did anyone read a few years back about Africa sending us something bad and bees laced with poison being in the crates? I'd like to research that to this present day, see what became of it. I bet there was a reason for that too. Darn terrorists.

They are carpenter bees - trust me, I'm right - they are a problem here - some people call them bumble bees too - I think there are other kinds of bumble bees, but these are carpenter bees FOR SURE.

you can't find a nest because carpenter bees don't build outside nests - they bore holes into wood and build their nests inside there - they are on the poop/patio stone/bucket because they are drinking moisture. They are smaller because they need to fit inside small holes bored into the wood :)

The verdict is in -- I got a hold of an exterminator and sent him the picture after I spoke with him. He said they are bumble bees and the nest is in the ground, likely hidden by grass. He said, yes, they can be very aggressive. when the nest is threatened. He said they often build the nest in an abandoned mouse nest.
He said they can also nest under slabs, could be my patio blocks,
They will come take a look.
If we find something, I will post a picture if anyone wants.

gsdlvr2 Glad you got a handle on it, poor puppy! I would like to know the outcome and good luck!
