Yes and sometimes an injury that has happened that you are unaware of to a leg , joint or elbow can result in a spinal injury that goes undetected....later the vertebrea starts movement and can do all kinds of strange things if not addressed....
Had a male, hit by a vehicle in a parking lot,,,,dazed him , and chipped his elbow,,Vet took out the chip....but no spinal view was done.. Then 5 years later, dog slowed down, started the yelp occasionally, nothing showing ,,ofa good hips, and then he whined , and one night woke me up, by the bed, crying and his head turned peculiar...I got up and tried to make him comfortable. Thought at first he was having a stroke..I got him to the vet and a spine view was done and the vertebrae directly alighned with the elbow the chip came out of , was closing and very little space between it. I put him on Rymadyl for a month and it got only worse...
End of the story at Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you everyone for the input.
I definately now know that the MRI is the way to go. My vet knows of a place in San Fransico, about an hour from me, that does the MRI for $1200. He is going to see how much UC Davis charges for their MRI's, they have a nuerology department there.
I was wondering about a bone chip.
At two and a half years old the only way to slow him down is to keep him crated all the time or sedated. I couldn't do that to him long term. His slowest gate is a trot.
DKiah- The best help has been your comment not to panic. With how bad things have been in the last six months, panic comes easy.

anicka, Also have them check the diaphramic muscles, a friend of ours dog had a torn diahphramic muscle, and though you would think it would heal and stop the nonesense, Her dog did not for a very long time, well the DX was a long time coming and then finally a full heal about 2 years later, But it's kinda like a broken rib, Take two asprin and take it easy thing, there really was nothing to be done other than let it heal, but of course certain movements would break the little bit of healing that had occured and back to square 1. Good Luck, Keep us posted.

Hi everyone.
Right now I am in a holding pattern UC Davis couldn't get me an appointment with a nerologist until Sept 29
The local vet that does MRI's does not have an appointment with the nerologist until Aug 17. They won't bump him up because he is not showing nerologic signs and they have to many other dogs that are already down. I tried really hard to convince them that it would be much better to have him go in before he has problems and if a disk actually goes it may be too late for him. No go. They did give him the appointment for the 17th and put him on a waiting list if someone else cancels.
My vet is not happy. He wants him seen before a problem shows, not after when it may be too late. He is not getting any better responses than me.
The current local price for a MRI is $2000 to $2500. The higher price being the closer vet.
I know there is a place in San Francisco that does canine MRI's. Does anyone know who that is?

I think this place does, or at least should be able to refer you:

Anika,
I am not sure how close you are to Rohnert Park, but there is a really nice place there called Animal Care Center. They are a 24 hour facility, and I have had great luck with them. They have everything right there.
I am including their phone number and email address. Best of luck and keep us posted.

People are describinig several different conditions here and I think some clarification is needed.. the person who mentioned myelopathy, there is no pain associated with myelopathy, it's basically a degeneration and total break down of nerve endings and the dog feels nothing..
someone else described vertabrae creating bone spurs that fuse together and that is called spondylosis and although most vets are told in vet schools there is no pain associated withthis condition, they are very wrong.. it causes arthritis and that we allknow is very painfull.. we too have a dog on Adequan injections (hips are fine.. spondylosis causing the pain)
I also have a friend who is a vet who is convinced and I agree with her that most dogs will develop spondylosis, just like we develop arthritis as we age.... their build will eventually develop weaknesses and its the body's way of helping it....
Good luck, Anika.. glad I had something you could use....I still think you want to see an all around sports vet .. theyall have access to these tools and manyothers and then you work as a team on your dog.
I am so guilty of the panic thing!!
Keep us posted please
