Dakota is certified through a local group called Love on a Leash. It was just basic obedience for them. What I am proud of most is that he is nationally certified through the Delta Society. This organization puts the dog through an number of trials. I was told by the judges that 90% of dogs do not pass the first time. I have to get some bragging rights in here and say Dakota passed his first time with a perfect score.
Delta Society tests consist of basic obedience. They will take you and the dog into a large room with about 10 people. Along with obedience they have tests like walking the dog through the group of people, people yelling and fighting, wheelchairs, touching the dogs tail and feet with some pulling. They are looking that the dog does not respond to the stimuli and stays focused on your commands during the trials. They also want to see that the dog engages other people when told to. Just make sure your dog is well socialized and is comfortable with anything going on.
This is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Dakota goes to cancer centers and sits with patients getting treatment. We went to a childrens hospital and there was a 5 yr. old there that was terrified of Dakota. He was terminally ill and it broke my heart. I gave Dakota no commands and he went over to the boy. I went to get him and Dakota laid down and rolled over to expose his belly. The little boy fell in love. They spent the rest of the day together and Dakota would not leave this child. I felt bad for the other kids, but I think those two found each other that day and I was not going to end it.
