hit send too quick sorry....

Also if they had NOT intended to shoot this guy then why not have an officer walk in ???  because they had already made up they're minds to shoot him,  You can bet if it had been an officer approaching the man,  No one else from the group would have opened fire,  But with it being "Just" a dog, well yes the dogs are expendable before human lives.   At least that is my understanding anyway...

Expendable Assets.

This is awful. Never should have happened. It looks to me as soon as the dog was sent someone began to fire because you can hear it before you see the dog in the video reach the perp. I feel for the K9 handler. I believe it was him that you can hear say "God D_m it! God F_ckin' D_m it Cole etc.

I don't think ANY LE K9 handler views their K9 partner as "an expendable asset". That is quite insulting to entire LE community. It's a shame someone would actually have that misconception.

Yes Trailrider I saw and heard the same as you. My thought is, maybe lack of communication with the LEO and K-9 Officer. Obviously the K-9 officer was pissed at what took place. Maybe the dog broke away from him unwanted? Who knows for sure? We were not there to witness the whole thing in it's entirety.

Also I believe after this took place it was found what the man threw down was a black wallet. Just something I was told by someone who has seen the video before. Makes no difference to me what he had in his pocket. If it was me I would have shot him just the same, for not putting his hands out in the clear. No way to know what he had in his hand. Could have been a grenade, gun, knife, anything! This is why you do what you are told, when a gun or many guns are pointed at you!

The dog is the only one I believe, didn't deserve to get shot! Things happen, if you are not in LE, you have no idea how much pressure is on you, when you are on the other end of the issue.

So sorry for the dog and his partner.

I should'nt be speculating on this at all because I don't have speakers on this computer.  Maybe you guys are right.  Maybe "Cole" is the k9 and he took off without orders.  Maybe that is why there was confusion with other officers.  If a guy had him in his sights/scope, he wouldn't see the dog until the last moment.  All the officer would see is this guy raising his hand with a possible gun.  Maybe that is why there was fire just before the k9 arrived.

Someone was sure trigger-happy!  It sounds to me like the officers opened fire BEFORE the dog was released. It is possible he broke away from his handler at the sound of the gunfire. It doesn't look to me like the perp fired his weapon at all, if he even had one, and was not bluffing. Also, he sounds like he's spaced out on drugs.

Sheesh,   I don't beleive the K-9 handler beleives the dog is an expendable asset,  But I do know the departments view them as expendable assets.    So if it is MY misconception,  it is also the Misconception of many department upper ups !!

Also "cole" in the video I think was "A**hole"  there YOU in front of the word cole, or a88hole which ever it is.

And you clearly can hear the K-9 handler say I'm sending the dog,  this is your last chance,   I heard it how could the guy who started shooting NOT hear it.     I never heard anyone tell the shooter,  Take the shot.    and the perp had not "Moved" so why did he start shooting ???  when the bullets started flying "Nothing had changed"   I don't know what the "PROMPT" was for the shooter to open fire.

The saddest thing I heard on the video was "Good Job Buddy"  Good Job

Not once did I hear oh shit I'm sorry,  or oh shit the dog,

the only one I could hear distraut by this was the handler and he was clearly VERY upset.  Curing and tossing something my guess would be maybe his lead ??  something hit the ground.

Very Very sad for the handler,  I can't imagine how he is feeling right now....

by EchoMeadows on 23 July 2007 - 15:07

the lead was on the dog,  I don't know what I heard hit the ground ?   but reviewing again,  the dog has the lead on him.

Plain and simple for me---K9s should not be utilized in these scenarios....but only as deterrents or searchers.  That is how I feel--take it or leave it.  If I was a cop involved in a situation AS the one presented on the video, my effectiveness would be completely compromised once the K9 appeared. I'd start worrying about how or if the dog would be deployed......knowing full well someone always screws up.

I'm not going to judge those involved individually, and I certainly don't want to hear the usual LE defense,,,,,,The dog is dead, and the handler is probably brokenhearted.  I don't think K9s should be used like this, period.
