With my 7-year old cutting horse the vet started out Adequan shots twice in the joint then IM monthly. Boy was that pricey. Many many months of shots, didn't help, but he had bone spurs in his stifle, a little more difficult to treat. Nothing we tried helped but he still lived to 28-years that I know of. If you can afford it, I would try for HD.

Thanks for posting Rezkat5. It will be interesting to see in time how well this actually works.

i'll look into the trixsyn too. the shockwaves also sound interesting. it sorta sounds like the ultra-sound thing a physical therapist used on me years ago to help w/cartilege damage from a car accident. dont understand it, but if it works - hey! i'll also check on the injections of ha. thanks all for new (to me) alternatives to try to help hd. i'm trying to do whatever i can to stop or slow any progression of hd in my boy. although i know there's no guarantee for my pup, it's heartening to hear that many other dogs have lived long happy lives w/hd.

I tried this Arthro-100x that I saw on this site somewhere. I put all three of my babies on it. Only my old guy shows signs of the dysplasia even though all 3 have bad hips, He was able to cut down his pain meds and actually it seemed to be working, I brought it to the vet and she read the ingredients lead, sand, thallidamide (the stuff that causes terrible birth defects in children), and some other things that she said she would never recommend, although they are probably so trace and the dog is 11 by the time it could build up in his system to be toxic he won't live that long. She did say take the 1 and 2 yr old off asap and just to use the glucosamine with MSM and Omega 3 fish oils and hopefully hold off surgery as long as possible. Tankfully the 2 younger ones love to swim in the pool so that is good therapy in holding off the surgery, but my old man won't swim. The things we gio through for our babies, :-)

The shock wave treatments are very interesting. We actually got a machine where I work as an experiment, well sort of. My boss who had the time had an older pit female with the most god aweful arthitis in her elbows. Before she purchased the machine she had treatment done on her dog to see if it actually worked. The dog went from hardly being able to move, to being able to cruise around fairly well. We've done the treatment on several dogs with varying results. So, it's something to think about...
