Rezkat5 Makes a valid point, when your talking to breeders, If you want to go Look, Let that breeder know your intention is only for investigation purposes. So long as they know up front your only coming to look they will not expect anything more than to answer questions for you and show you around... Good luck, Have Fun, and stick to your guns, sounds like you know what you want, don't settle for anything less than what you want. Do consider though, that the pounds do have alot of nice Purebred Shepherds in them. :-)
It amazes me how many wonderful purebreed dogs we get here, that never get claimed.

ChBailey, if you'd consider an older dog, this one has wonderful bloodlines. I can't believe no one wants him... I nearly bought him myself, but decided two males in the household was not a good idea! He's classified as a pet because he's only got one testicle.

And just because I don't plan on showing my dog or making it into a working dog doesn't mean I should settle for a mangy mutt at the local pound

There are two threads on this board just started today about 2 rescues. Take a look at them, I think it would change your mind about what kind of GSD's you find at rescues. They are not "mangy mutts", they are magnificent GSD's down on their luck in need of a home.

I know it's a great thing to adopt dogs at the pound. I have my heart set on getting my puppy at 8 weeks of age and raising him myself!

I understand completely. There's nothing quite like a puppy & nothing smells as sweet as 'puppy breath'!

Or puppy poop!
