The OFA will grade and issue reports on dogs without tattoos or microchips. The number issued will just reflect the dog does not have any form of permanent identification.

Also, the OFA does not compare radiographs among different breeds for the purpose of grading. Thus, German Shepherd Dogs will only be compared to German Shepherd Dogs, so that blows one argument for SV a-stamping out the window.

OFA preliminary (prior to 24 months of age) x-rays have proven to be an excellent predictor of a dog's final hip and elbow status. This is a very good practice for those with promising young dogs--might as well find out BEFORE pouring time and work into a dog only to have your heart broken. Believe me, I know.

Also, let's hear how many of you out there have imported dogs with a-normal or fast normal hips only to receive a real nasty suprise when hips were re-x-rayed??? I've had 5 who turned out to be quite obviously dysplastic--hips and/or elbows, usually unilateral. No, you couldn't tell by looking at the dogs... all of mine gaited beautifully, were titled, koered and from different lines and importers over a 10 year period. Bad luck? Probably. But I will no longer accept an a-stamp on a 12 month old animal as proof-positive the dog is not dysplastic. I suggest ALWAYS re-examining any dog one intends to incorporate into a breeding program---hips, elbows, and spine!!

Hey, I know the OFA isn't perfect, but when I have had over 10 dogs OFA "Good" at 2 years of age and AGAIN be graded as "Good" at 5 and 7 years of age upon reevaluation....that should really get your attention if you are a serious breeder screening against orthopedic problems. And I re-x-rayed these dogs purely for academic interest, not because they developed any problems. So, I for one, will stick with OFA. Just my 2-cents worth for anybody who cares.
