find a good working line breeder and let them know what you want. From a strong working litter get a pup who is "middle of the litter" in terms of drives and hardness.

if you want show lines then just be very careful on getting the good temperment.

Thank you Yvette,

I spoke to a lady in a local club earlier today. (Thanks neuen-polizei for the links!) I am going to check out a club this Sunday, if not the following week. Looking forward to meeting some people there. Happily, the club is only about an hour and a half away from me.

Desert,

I have already paid for my pup. The breeder is very competitive in the sport and the pedigree on my pup looked impressive. I didn't see any show dogs on his web site, well, I didn't see any show titles in the pedigrees anyway...The breeder also quickly and easily answered each question I thought to ask, even ones that probably  sound foolish. LOL When I write him again I will definitely tell him what you said to ask for so I have a better chance of getting the right pup for me. Thank you again for your time

Kindly, Stacy

hi YellowRose,

Thanks for the info. Orumhaus is one of the sites I went to when I was looking for a puppy!!! :-) She was all sold out though. She lives only about a half hour from me. I will email her today to ask about a club. The club I was referring to above, the one I'm going to visit on the weekend,  is the Austin Sch. Club. The lady I spoke to was very nice. She explained to me that it's better to check out a few different clubs. She said that you spend so much time together that you want to make sure you will like the other members.  Ain't that the truth?! LOL I appreciate all the info. Thanks!

Kindly, Stacy

Hi Stacy--congratulations on your new dogs.  I'm in Dallas--(www.DFWWorkingDogs.com is our club)

There is a link on our site to the South Central Region of USA, and you might contact Betty Thomas--a really neat lady who had done both show and working lines--and lives near Houston but sometimes comes up to work with us.   Anyway, I believe she is still secretary for the region and would know a lot about the different clubs from here to Louisiana.   Her email should be on the South Central site.  If not, let me know and I'll try to find it for you.   It IS smart to visit several.

Let me know if I can help in any way, also.

Julia

When I picked Chaos out of the litter of 8, I looked for several different things.  1st was which one came to me first, then came to me first again after i walked away and talked to the breeder for a few minutes, then did it again!  2nd. I was looking for a coated and she had 4 in the litter and I also wanted a male this time around.  I usually get female.  3rd, I did a few temperament testing things with him, checked his teeth to make sure he was ok there.  Something about him drew me to him. He seemed quite bold, and had a special glow in his eyes.  Some how I knew he was the one, and that he was going to go places.  I finally built up enough guts to show him in conformation at the end of April, just before he turned a year old.  In 2 weekends, he finished and is now a champion.  We are now going for his grand championship.  He had never been in the ring, and I had never been in the conformation ring.  But I had done obedience trials before with my other dogs.  I have found that I like the conformation allot better than the obedience.  I think Chaos does too, lol.  Good luck on finding the right GSD pup for you.  I think you will know when you find it! as I did with Chaos.

Stacy,

Welcome aboard.  Its always good to have people on here with a variety of experience....oops sarcasm levels. The folks on the board on typically embrace all questions and before long you too can be in the middle of the drama regarding work vs show lines; roach back vs straight back; and my personal favorite, How much obedience on a young dog is too much and kills its drives?

WELCOME ABOARD!

Shepherd Woman,

Congratulations on Chaos' championship! It must have been scary as anythig that first time in the show ring :-) I have been reading your posts and it sounds like you are having a blast with him~! He IS very handsome, by the way.

I personally won't be able to examine my pup or do any temperment testing since he is in Belgium, I would only be choosing by looking at pictures. I have decided to have my breeder choose him for me. I'm not as disappointed as I thought I would be by leaving the decision up to him, I just think he can make a better match for me...and I think all the pups were pretty cute LOL

Thanks Again

Stacy
