I, too, have sent a letter to the sheriff, not that I think it will do anybody any good. My heart is breaking for the family involved in this horrible thing and I am sure that had it been one of mine, he wouldn't have died alone. The whole rabies check is such a crock of s$%t, the department circling the wagons and trying to look pious... bastards.

I just talked to my mother who lives a hop, skip and a jump down route five in Charlotte Hall. While it is on the other side of the county line, she has said she has heard about the residents getting involved and raising their voices. She also has a dog and she said alot of the people down there are furious that this happened...she also mentioned that the cop sounds like he is in serious trouble - when she gets home she is going to look up some of the articles for me and I will let you know more when I hear about it.

My letter: (I hope it sounds alright, I was angry when writing it):
Dear Sir,
I am hoping that this letter does not fall on deaf ears.
I am not a law enorcement officer but, have went thru the Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in the past. I understand that police and deputies are there for the common enforcement of the law. Since when does that include shooting an animal that is properly restrained when not threatened with "real bodily harm"? When I went thru the Academny, the ONLY time it was deemed permissible to discharge your weapon was when you feared for your life! Since when does a properly tethered dog make you fear for your life? Especially when you have no real need to be walking in this dog's immediate vicinity? This officer was looking for a young man who did NOT live at this address but, whose address had been given. He knocked on the front door with no answer. he then proceeded to go to the windows and then on to the back door??? Why? Where was the Search Warrant? This dog was doing whay ANY and EVERY well trained Pet would do, not to mention what is inherently bred into the German Shepherd to protect his family and property at all costs. And then, the paramedics went on to tell the family that the officer was not injured beyond anything more than a scratch, not even requiring a band-aid! Give me a break! Some officer you have there.
God forbid if a child would have been within the immediate vicinity when he decided to fire a barrage of ammunition into this helpless dog, who had no recourse but to stand and face death. What a crack shot you have there if it took 7 bullets to make this officer realize he had hit his target!
Sir, you do your department an injustice by keeping this officer on the payroll!

continued...
If I were one of his peers, I would be signing a petition to remove his sorry arse from my department's roster.
And, just how will you compensate the family that your deputy so vagrantly violated by murdering their precious pet? I understand to some people, a dog is just a piece of property. To a lot of people, including this family, your deputy took a loving member of their family away from them in a very horrific, unimaginable, unjustified manner. And then, on top of that, they didn't feel that the vaccination records were sufficient enough and so, they decapitated this family member to prove it did not have rabies. Was that really necessary? And, for a scratch???
I can only imagine the pain and suffering this has caused this family not to mention the many pet owners throughout this country when they think it could have been their companion.
I sincerely hope you think twice about every allowing this deputy access to a badge again let alone a weapon!
And the real topper to all of this is the fact he has been accused of killing other dogs!
How many times does this heinous act have to be repeated before somebody steps in and stops him? He needs to be removed from duty. He is not mentally fit for this position, if any.
I hope he faces serious charges and is deemed dangerous to society as he has shown thus far.
Sincerely,
A very concerned citizen and Pet Owner,
Dawn Wagner
