Giagante....I tried to google Sierra Working dogs and found website but when you click Dogs it is all in a virus type of language. :-(

Do you have a better link to their dogs? Thanks!!

I was thinking...do you think it is a coincidence that my dog has old bloodlines and is from a breeder who has been breeding for 24 years but does not breed for sport or show?

I wonder if that is the fate of older bloodlines? You won't see a lot of titles but there is a consistency in breeding and the breeders are obviously dedicated to be breeding  the lines for decades......

alas, the fate of the ''older lines'' is to make ''newer lines'' or go extinct! The fate of the breed is for breeders to follow the standard. There is one and it is as old as the breed.

The standard??? Don't make me LAUGH! The frickin' standard is whatever the frickin' Powers That Be decides it is!!

Take a look at this to see how drastically the GSD (both German AND American) has changed in the last 100 years. HOW MUCH HAS THE STANDARD CHANGED??

HARDLY AT ALL!!

Sun, the standard didn´t change, but the preference of people.
Faults were made and several still are made - but let´s be honest - it´s the responsibility of the breeders to breed healthy stock and to think twice - they are producing, nobody else.
Nobody is forced to follow any flavor - solid dogs will get solid ratings, but both breeders and owners want to have success.
At the end of the day it´s about honour and money.

What I don´t like about your link is the comparison from Wolf to German Shepherd, our breed is no Wolf, never has been.
Nobody is going to compare a Doberman with a wolf...

Well, I understand the point she's trying to make by showing the wolf and other wild canids. It's to show the roach back is unnatural, and not necessarily stronger. A 145 lb. wolf that's capable of running 40 miles a day definitely needs a strong back and legs!  Regular Smile

In this case you are able to question any breed - almost none of them looks like a Wolf.
I´m absolutely with you about the "roached" backs, but really, this is within the responsibility of the breeders, nobody is forced to follow trends.

by gsdstudent on 24 March 2014 - 19:03

I think of the standard as an ''ideal'' . No dog will match it 100%. I do like the form of the show dogs in the 50s and 60s with Bodo and Bernd being very attractive dogs. I still see GSDs which look similar to these animals.

Susie, if you want to win in the show ring, you HAVE to follow trends! That's the hard part. Sad Smile Most breeders want to win, otherwise there won't be much of a market for their dogs.
