Thank you for clarifying, Mudwick. I don't need or want anyone to like me. In fact, I don't expect or want it. I only ask what is fair and reasonable. I try to give that to others. I have respect for others. I treat others well, unless they are abusive to me, and then I will make a choice to avoid or defend, by whatever means seem appropriate. I do not LIKE to trade insults and vulgarities. It is bad form, and everyone should know this and abide by it. But, it seems to be the only language that some people understand. If I am eloquent, they call me "batshit crazy" and blah, blah. I don't really care that much. I have a fairly thick skin. I grew it when I was little. I had to put up with a lot of bullying, then. Just so you understand where I am coming from, OK?
A person is a victim, anytime they are forcibly subjected to treatment with which they do not agree, but are powerless to defend against. For a lot of people in history, that is a condition which has been delivered by or through some function of government, including criminal justice systems. We have recently seen video and reports from the Middle East, showing the carriage and performance of "Sharia law" and it's sentences, including stoning and beheading or mutilation of women, based on baseless accusations in most cases. It is the right of a man to kill his sister, his wife, his daughter, in these places. He hardly needs a reason.. to be seen alone with a man is enough. That brings shame upon the family and must be avenged to fulfill the law. This is right in their eyes. They've been doing it for thousands of years. And, in a way, you could say that it works for them. They have a criminal justice system, of sorts. If a hungry man steals something to eat, he has his hand cut off. If he also runs, he has a foot cut off. And this is all done in public, and if the man has no relatives to cauterize and tend to his wounds, he may bleed to death. Nevertheless, it is the law, and the law must be fulfilled.
There is no comparison between the above system and our own. We definitely ARE better, However, we are far from perfect, and it is a delicate balance. Thomas Jefferson said that it would be better to let a thousand guilty me go free, than to execute one innocent man. But we have executed many innocent men, and DNA proves this beyond a doubt. We should have no tolerance for sloppy and unethical practices in law enforcement and criminal justice sytems. It is a violation of every man, woman, child in this country.
I find the bloodlust particularly worrisome. I hardly matter, at this point in my life. But this experience has made me into a civil libertarian, and I chafe when I see that people are dismissive in their attitudes, even vindictive and mean, cruel.. mocking and laughing at people who have suffered greatly, aready, and are denied any opportunity to redeem themselves. It is very, very sad to consider that this is just human nature and that we are doomed to repeat some of humanities most lamentable turns, over and over, again.
