Paranshep, I'm not sure if we are on the same page here or not. First you appearing to be defending the wearing of colors and next thing it seems like you are not in favor of those who do that or the guys with the expensive rigs. What's the story? IMO advertising your kennel while competing in the show ring is tacky and should not be allowed. Again, if the judge needs to see a flashing neon sign that says "pick me, I'm from vom RinTinTin", he should not be judging. It's not about pride, it's about bragging rights which should never be displayed inside the showring. And you also seem to think it's good for the breed for the same judges to be judging here who are doing the Sieger and some other important shows in Germany? Who does that benefit? I don't show my GSD, have never wanted to although I could afford to do so. If I wanted to I could buy a top winning dog from Germany already titled and rated and haul it to shows in a big rig with my name painted all over the side. That's not my thing. I like to handle my own dogs. If I have to pay a handler to take my dog in the ring, I have no interest. That's me and my opinion of the whole dog show scene, both the SV and the AKC way of going; you can do whatever you want. Do I have to have SV show experience to have enough common sense to be able to recognize that this whole system is set up for the average breeder in the US to fail? Can you deny that there will never be an American bred dog owned by a person of average income and no backers that will ever make it's mark in the SV show ring regardless of how great it is? What about disregarding all the dogs percevied as worli line and not deserving of an honest evaluation. How can any of that be in the best interests of the breed? Why would anyone give that judge another entry? You have put a spin on many of the things I've said here. I never advocated breeding to an inferior dog. Is that what you meant when you said a "losing dog". IMO a losing dog is not the same as a good dog that is not shown or that doesn't earn the placement it deserves due to not having the right handler or owner or breeder. I would hope that breeders know the difference between a mediocre dog and one that gets cheated due to its owner not living on the right side of the tracks. I suggested that there are plenty of good dogs that are not shown due to the politics involved and that rushing blindly to breed to the Sieger is not something a thinking person does. That dog might be the right dog for some bitches who are taken to him, but I doubt he's right for all. My bottom line is that I feel for those with good dogs and not enough spendable cash to ever be a big player. Do I like to go to shows and look at the GSD judging? Of course. Do I take the ratings seriously, of course not. I'm not an SV person, but I wasn't born under a rock either; I'm not buying into all this crap about that one should need the big name handlers, the team colors, etc so the rest of the GSD world recognizes you have a good dog. Any smart breeder knows which dogs are the good ones and which only win bacause of politics. I will give you if your goal is to have a dog that places high at an important show and selling puppies or stud services based on the reputation of th at dog is what drives you (you being the collective you) then, yeah, you will have to spend tons on a handler and smooze the judges, airfare, vacations, expensive restaurants. etc.. Just doesn't seem like ethical behavior to me and placements won that way could be interpreted as shallow victories. However, no way do I believe that the only way to breed a good GSD is to do it based on show results that depend on how much money one decides to spend.

Oh boy, did I make an error in typing. My comment,"How many are now willing to pay $3k and up to be a major contender in next yr's Seiger show?"--should have been "How many are now willing to pay $3k and up FOR A PUPPY to be a major contender in next yr's Seiger show?

Blitzen, I'm not judging anyones right to advertize or rent vehicles to bring in truckloads of dogs to up their chances of winning. you on the other hand feel it is tacky. That is as much your right to feel the way you do as they feel it is their right. When the smoke clears, it is their kennel name everyone will see in the result list, not yours...or mine

To continue--I thought the poster was just trying to let everyone think they'd win when armed with the best--a subliminal message to buy a $3k pup (that perhaps he could provide). Wish I had read my previous post before running to the store.

LMH if the $3k dog beats the less expensive dog you bought or bred at the next show, its because the judge judging the dog feels the more expensive one is better conformed. if on the other hand yours wins then you can brag about what a great breeder you are as well as having a nice cup and a blue ribbon to boot. However, if you lose, then if you want to win, you'll just have to up the ante when breeding to or buying your next dog Or just quit. I see the decsion as being an easy one to make, but then perhaps I'm to logical

Paranshep, would you believe me if I told you that if I had to do things like that to get my name in the results list, I'll pass every time? Have a good one.........

by LMH on 27 April 2007 - 20:04

Logical isn't a word I'd use to describe you, P. Cookie (super smart) fits you better. Would love to know if I was correct, but alas, I'll have to be content with the knowledge that you know someone is wondering. (LOL) Thanks, again.

Blitzen, Rin tin Tin was a well trained dog, but had horrible conformation and mediocre pigmentation. Despite this, I believe there is an american woman in Texas that still breeds on his lines. Maybe you should.....naw, never mind just teasing. Lighten up on the morality amd ethical stuff though. Just like I, you must learn to accept that not all people from all parts of the world share the same morality or ethics as you. That doesnt make them right or you wrong, just different. Better yet, form your own club and your own rules get people to join and...

yeah...I suppose. "Don't hate the player, hate the game".

by Blitzen on 27 April 2007 - 20:04

Paranshep, I was raised to be a moral person and told that it's not right to cheat others to get what you want no matter how badly you want it or where you live or what god/s you worship. Thanks for the suggestion about forming my own morality club. I'll be sure to give it some thought. So far I've not made a lot of effort to convert any of the "others" I just choose to take the high road and not associate myself with them.
