I would like to make a further comment regarding my criteria for breeding. If I were to start a breeding programme again I would need to buy a female. I would be looking to find a female with as little close inbreeding as possible upon inspection of the pedigree. Assuming the physical criteria that I set out in an earlier post was met I would be researching and taking into account the genetic inbreed coefficients of both male and female in order to get as much genetic diversity as possible. We have the information about this on this database and shown in each dog’s pedigree page. There is two calculations, one by Wright whose calculation he formed in 1922 and, the other by Hardiman whose calculation was formed in 2000. The information of the two calculations cannot be integrated as different criteria was used in arriving in each calculation. Wright’s calculation was made for a five generation pedigree and Hardiman’s made for more generations. For information purposes I like to go back to seven/ten generations.  The total score under both systems would, for me, have to be very low to continue.

I would hope that I could start with a female with no inbreeding in the first five generations. This would provide more genetic diversity. The mating would then depend on the inbreed on the male side whether or not he came from working or show line, both of which I would be prepared to use.

The results of this method may not be a complete success in the first generation but serve better as a building block but I think that it will provide a wider genetic diversity for future litters.

Mac, I would deviate a little from your way in that I would start with a brood bitch that was linebreed like Burgas Haus Himpel. From there I would develop my line.

Hi Gustav - I am afraid that I do not know the dog you mention.  I like the look of  Zara v Pendler, her breeder Wolfgang Meinen is a very good breeder as is his father (Ostfriesien Thingstatte).

As much as I like Bernd, Gustav, 2-2 is awfully close breeding!   http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=17030-burga-vom-haus-himpel

Unless there's another female of the same name, born more recently??
