Sunsilver

Vonnisk, a Valiantdale dog came into the Montana GSD Rescue a few years ago. It had a very poor temperament, almost like a feral dog. The breeder woudn't take it back, either. And she had several new litters either on the ground, or on the way. What Smile

I work under the premiss that top producers leave top sons and daughters, great producers leave top grandsons and grand daughter. Otherwise you are breeding to phenotype. Outside of a tragicly short life, a dog who's owner took time to collect semen from, He must have been  used at stud. There should be an offspring trail to see. I do believe the answer to ''where are the old style dog'' sends the questioner on a long [ but fruitful ] quest into the GSD.

Old Bodo Ad.
For Gustav, I think Bodo was less available than other studs of that time.

Sunsilver, sent you a PM.

Hi Sunsilver; interesting adv!  I read that Bodo and Bernd, his brother, went VA in the late 1960s because of the then new "A"stamp policy by the SV. It was a rumored that many of the males thought to go VA the same year as Bodo could not get the A Stamp. This is an example that not all was better years ago. It is also edvidence that the SV will address problems in the breed, be it sometimes too slow. I wonder how many ''breeders with fire in their bellies'' it took to get they SV to do the "A"stamp program. I bet if breeders today want something else new to better the breed, they can effect it by mass action.

Gsdstudent, it appears that the American SL breeders have in the past and presently do breed to phenotype. That's a problem in all breeds which are bred for the judges in conformation rings.

Thanks, mollyandjack!

Does anyone know who imported Bodo/who owned him?

Paul or others.....

Is it possible to have a great working dog that is social? I mean I don't want a dog that will take me two weeks to touch. Is working ability antithetical to social behavior?

Yes, Gustav and Sunsilver...that makes sense!!

Smiley, what do you mean by social? Do you mean aloof to strangers but very tolerant and safe in crowds, etc., or do you mean a dog that actually desires friendly interaction with strangers?

Hired Dog

Yes Sarah, it is possible to get a dog that can work and be social. Social aggression is something that some people want, I am one of them, but, no, you dont have to get a dog that takes 2 weeks to touch.
What you need to understand is that there are various levels of aggression and hardness in dogs and that will reflect in their abilities. I have no idea what it is you want to do with said dog, but, I will tell you this and trust me when I say it...those dogs that are tough, aggressive, willing to take on ANYONE at anytime, may be the best dogs to "ride the river with", but, they are NOT the easiest ones to live with, for a few different reasons.
