Getting a DOG to protect your family is so amateur. Forget a German Shepherd, forget a dog... if you are serious you will get a Grizzly Bear. They are the only way to go for real protection, they're very civil.

I am sorry, but I have not read all the posts here. So I hope I am not repeating someone too much. But here is my answer.
Select:
First of all you are not looking for a dog but you are looking for a person/ breeder/trainer to whom you can trust and let him select you a proper dog/ pup. Really the best way to go is to buy a trained dog where what you see is what you get.
If you can not afford well trained dog then you need to go with pup. You need to get
GSD pup/dog which has been bred with work (not just sport or just show) in mind. That means balance between prey and defense based on courage, in not an extreme level but in moderate level. Dog bred also for territoriality, able to discriminate instead of having one track mind, intelligent, easy to train, with good packing instinct. These traits should be inherited. Than they need to be developed through proper training and socialization. Through timely and slow process.
First make the dog "lover" and then you can make him a "killer". Not the other way around. That way you will get discriminative "friendly until told otherwise dog" .
Hire a good trainer who knows what's up or better yet buy already a properly trained dog.
