In one of the litters I was talking about, the bitch was a proven brood with no adverse history; and started off looking after the pups fine, as normal. Then overnight at about 3 days, the 'orrible 'appened. Otherwise I'd agree with you, Bhaugh. But that does not look like not knowing what she should be doing.

I think that sometimes a dam will not be a good mother if she doesn't feel that the environment is safe for the puppies.
Pretty much every decent breeder I know won't breed a poor mother again. It's just not worth the grief and trouble--as well as possibly passing on bad traits to the next generation.
