What is commonly known as a Kinktail or a Korkscrew tail is not an inherited condition. As mentioned above, the dog will have to have his/her spine x-rayed before breeding. Please, do not panic. It probably looks worse on a GSD than on some of the docked breeds. But, just take the American boxer or any other docked breed where puppies are being docked at 5 days old. Nobody on the American continent has ever worried about the kinktail. They should worry about it. It's wrong to neglect and hide the fact that a puppy was born with a kinktail, but, those breeders do not understand or care. Now, with a GSD, everybody will comment and ask the question. So, now its out in the open with the GSD but not with the docked breeds?
The Kinktail has a definite kink somewhere along the tail, usually sideways. You can feel it in the bone structure of the tail when you run your fingers along the tail. The Korkscrew tail looks like the tail has been turned like a screw into a little lump firmly attached to the body. Probably looks terrible on a GSD, but not bad at all on a docked breed. Germany and other countries request an x-ray of the spine before breeding, and a medical certificate because the kinktail must be docked.
