He has a nasty growl and bark in the back yard if he hears someone lurking, and in the house if there is someone at the door, however, if he can see the person, he only stares...

Michael,
I agree.

Kitkat,
As far as the hat and disguise thing goes, don't you think the dog knows it's you? Can your dog be fooled that easily?

NO, MY dogs can't be FOOLED That EASILY... It takes ANY dog more than a few seconds to put scent and sight into perspective...

I'm NOT teaching them to respond to ROUTINE, They are to React to BEHAVIOR...
of course, IF they see me disquing myself, they KNOW it's me...and..." I can fool some of the dogs some of the time, But I can't fool all of The Dogs ALL OF THE TIME"!!!!
I'm making sure the other dogs don't see me putting on my"cognito", so they don't tell ! it takes more than a minute or two for them to realize it's me!!!
with MY dogs, it's more fun, and teaching, than work. Maybe a home dog, is different than a working dog.
i can tell whether it is friend or foe who pulls into my driveway by the voice of the dog. I am fully aware of the different bark.
BEHAVIOR...NOT...ROUTINE..that was my understanding of the desired reaction!
(My dogs would look at me as a complete ass, if I thought I was going to get over on them!!!)

Jim,
hate to admit it, but I might have just proved your theory...
In between my last post and this one, my son came home,,,dogs barked...someone KNOWN is here, Leo came in , greeted with love. I told him of my discussion here. A little persuassion, I told him go out knock on the door, as yourself. Of couse everyone runs to door , tails wagging. .....I tell him take your hat off, cover your head, knock on door...
Dogs go to door, bark, wag tails. ONE Yorkie goes balistic. All Shepherds, know they are being fooled. I tell him go back out, cover your head. All dogs, but same Yorkie come back wagging tails, Duke is not there....Leo states they know it's him. WHERE IS MY HAT, and WHERE is DUKE.
Well Duke is in HIS crate, with Leo's hat....ignoring knock on door. My son is bitchin mad, he says his hat looks like "Duke made "Sweet Love " to his hat!!! he says, "C'mon mom, this is a $40 hat"!
Alright, you can FOOL some OF THE dOGS ALL OF THE tIME, BUT YOU CAN ONLY FOOL sHEPHERDS, some OF THE tIME!!!
     iT'S STILL ABOUT learned  BEHAVIOR!!!!!!!!!
