Thanks Maggie and Theresa!  He's a great pup but I fear we may need to have a 'come to Jesus' meeting soon over his ignoring my recall.  He absolutely knows what, "hier," means but chooses to ignore me and this is probably the most important command that a dog must learn for his own safety.

Several years ago, I pulled into my driveway and let the dogs out of my truck.  At the same time, a squirrel raced between my garage and the neighbor's privacy fence and my dogs gave chase.  I called to them and they stopped right at the edge of the alley behind my house just as a car tore through the alley at probably 40 MPH.  Had my dogs' recall not been absolute, they would both probably have been killed.

What I am struggling with tonight is whether it is better to correct him when he ignores me or to simply start keeping him on a leash all of the time.  My gut tells me that the latter is the better solution and that I am unreasonable to expect this from such a young pup so that is my plan going forward.

He's also starting to get his adult teeth so expect a pretty dramatic change in the size of his head over the next couple of months!

Well I hope that this punky pup doesn't get pano. Just love that age of "Lalala i don't hear you" attitude on the recall. I rememer the days of going though that with Dar.I won the disagreement!! The next day he came imediatly...it must have sunk in his little pee brain over night.lol

Wow, Keith, you've got a nice looking boy there!

He's got nice bone, I have to say, too...Looks like you've got your hands full.

My first GSD never had pano as a growing pup.  I never fed puppy food, either (heck, then it was whatever the store had cheapest...I was a kid then, and had to settle for whatever came home).  Oakley doesn't have any issues, either, but Prince was 3/4 American, 1/4 German lines, and Oakley is, I would guess, all American lines.  Maybe that's the difference?

Regardless, your boy is very handsome.  I guess I've been lucky that I've never had any problems with the recall with either of my GSDs...I guess I'll have to wait for that German GSD before I start having trouble with that!

Good luck, and have fun with that gorgoes boy!

Keith, here is Izzy just coming up on a recall but she was over 10 months old in this Pic double that age of your Lad, She even now has a turn every now and then of playing games and having Cloth Ears but she now knows how far to push her luck, as you say keep him on a long Line get him to Sit, walk away and then call him to you and give him a treat every time You do not need me telling you what to do but i find thats the best way, also from a Down if he is that far advanced, meanwhile it is all good training I do not think Pups can hold there concentration for more than a few minutes at a time at that age
