Cheri, she sounds like a nice youth huntseat prospect. Even western pleasure/equitation... With her breeding and former training, especially since she showed and won at a high caliber, there should be someone interested. Thing is, if they had a dog to trade that you liked...
Where was she when I was training and showing Apps as a youngster and amateur owner? LOL! But of course a horse like her would have cost $15-20K back then. That is why I was a barn rat and got to train and ride the client's pricey horses. No way could my parents or I afford a horse like that.

A schoolfriend of mine was given a "World Champion Appaloosa" filly several years ago. She came from a big name show barn in the Southeast, and she placed in the top 3 as a yearling and a 2 year old at the ApHC World Show. After she had won, her owners/breeders kept her in her stall 24/7 (you know since she was a "show horse.") They listed her price at $25,000. By the time my friend was given her (by a very well-known barefoot trimmer who had been contacted about her,) her hooves looked as though they were rotting off due to being (in a crappy) stall-kept 24/7. They didn't know if she was going to make it/would need to be euthanized.
The last I heard (2006,) the filly was much better - actually had hooves, and could walk on her own. Prior to all of that it took several $$$$ for chiropractor work (since the filly couldn't walk properly, throwing everything else off whack,) equine massage, and intensive daily hoof/leg care.
Her owner/breeders were selling her as a "broodmare" prospect.

They are beautiful animals. I was big into Morgans for a couple of years as a kid but a friend turned me on to this breed a while back and if I were to own a horse now, I'd want a Fresian.

Nice looking mules- both of them! Hauled a bear, huh? Impressive.
KitKat, I like your mare. ;-)
Maggie, I imagine you'd like more than 2/3...;-)
Keith...I never thought one would be w/in my reach. He wouldn't make "FPS approved" stallion (but then again how many would??) and since the breeder has access to great studs, he didn't need to keep him, and kept the filly instead, so I got a good deal.
We should start an OT horse thread...I feel bad we hijacked Cheri's thread.

Just anohter example of people with more money than sense!
They shouldn't be allowed to own any animal. Did anyone call animal control on these people?

Like so much else the bred is not what it once was, much has been lost and I doubt many true pure bred animals still exist today.
Refinement is not what I would be looking for, we have plenty of that in the dog world do we not.
The spots are what make the horse unique in my opinion, tho I know many of the original horses were not spotted.
Still they were rugged hardy animals with great endurance and quick sure footed speed.
Thats why the whites stole them from the Indians, well actually they came with the land after the wars.
As a boy I was around all kinds of horses, name the breed. Same as the dogs I tend to enjoy the middle of the road.
Hell I ain't proud, I'd ride most anything that didn't trip over its own feet, or try to kill me...
I've been thrown, kicked, rolled over on, and bitten, even left behind a time or two to walk home alone.
I just wish I had a barn and some pasture, I do miss riding.
Steph,
the riding sounds good, the incentive I need is the cash to make the trip, and some dependable wheels.
I keep buying those damned lottery tickets...lol
I've thought about just hitch hiking but then I'd never return, too much to leave behind and too old to change my ways.
clc,
I would not worry about the money, if you want to part with your horse I would just find someone who would love it and take good care of her.
You can find a good dog for an affordable price that would do very well for search and rescue in my opinion.
Moons.

My horses are allowed to be horses first and show horses second. They get put out into a 100' x 100' pen (biggest I can have on 1.5 acres) every morning for the day (weather permitting) so they can run and play. My trainer complains about their sun bleached coats but I don't care because they are happy. I also let them stand in the rain (in the pen) sometimes, because I have seen show horses waiting to go into the ring for a class totally freak out when it started raining and they got wet. My horses are exposed to loud noises, flapping tarps, trash cans, cars, bikes, and basically everything I can think of because it makes them better minded and safer to be around.
If I could figure out how to put pictures up on this site I could show them to you (proud moma that I am).
Anyway Lucy's lameness is very slight, so slight that if I didn't have the x-rays to prove it I would think she if faking to get out of working. She would be an awesome Huntseat, Trail, or Driving Youth / Amateur horse.
