Bravo Canada! Lord knows, the Earth would slipped off its axis, the sun would have gone supernova and Mars would have spun out of orbit, if the Canadians had not won that gold medal in hockey. I just dread to think of the consequences!! LOL The Soviet Union has not existed FOR OVER A DECADE!! Didn't you notice all those countries that sent athletes to the Games from , oh say UKRAINE, or BELARUS, ...or GEORGIA, or Russian Federation? :-)

by hodie on 01 March 2010 - 16:03

The advertisement the Russians put on last night about the coming games was very cool. I do wonder how the Russians will pull the games off because they are in such a serious economic situation. Hopefully the games will be a boon to them, as I am sure they were to Canada. The Canadians should be very proud of their effort. My own opinion was that the opening ceremony the Chinese put on will likely never be equalled in my lifetime, but other than that, these games were apparently well organized, the people of Canada wonderful hosts, and all the athletes of the world should go home proud to have taken part in some fantastic and spirited competition. And yes, secretly, who could not root for the Canadians during that hockey game. Oh the tears that would have been shed if they had not won. It was a fabulous game and our men should be proud. It could easily have gone another way in a heartbeat.

As for what has happened in the world relative to the dissolution of countries, most people here don't read anything, so no, they don't know there is no Soviet Union now.......or East Germany, or, or, or......

Ah, I know there is no Soviet Union or East Germany .. but that still doesn't mean they didn't win the medal table in the past.

Ok, now I agree with Phil.  LMAO

I was in the thick of the Vancouver celebrations last night. The red color for Canada was all over. There were quite a few people walking around with American flags. But not a single person hassled them. Only in Canada can you walk around in a crowd of beer fueled people with a rival color and nobody is going to bother you.
I heard somebody chanting, "USA, USA, but NOT today." It was an American.
Some of the major street intersections in downtown Vancouver were closed because people were playing street hockey. A lot of Canadian flags being waved and even a few American flags at the same time but again no problem. There was police presence but the worse the police had to deal with was being kissed by fans. I saw quite a few policewomen being given the kiss by enthusiastic male fans. No police dogs could be seen - not needed.

Lucky you!!! And so wonderful that people can celebrate or commiserate without resorting to violence. Probably, sad to say, it would not have been the same in our country.

That's not true Hodie. You really are anti-American arn't you. Keep grading those papers, eh.

by hodie on 02 March 2010 - 04:03

BE4U......you don't remember riots and violent celebrations after most major sporting events in this country? Nuff said. No, I am not anti-American and it is stupid of you to even suggest that. None the less,  I am often ashamed of how Americans behave, not only in foreign countries, but also in their own country. And not only after sporting events.........

Yep we aren't perfect but we haven't cheated the Olympics.  And, we didn't kill an athlete due to inferior design of a high speed ice chute.  Love all of the press and bronze medal given to someone who's best performance was the loss of her mother.  Don't get me wrong, I have sympathy for anyone who loses a family member but one should not gain stature above others because of a personal tragedy.  After all, they worked just as hard if not harder to make their way to the Games and may never have the chance to make it again.  But we know the Canadian figure skating program is not without controversy.  Gee I seem to remember an American short track skater whose grandfather came to see her at the games and died in the stands and she didn't get a gift medal.  I remember Dan Jansen whose best friend, his sister died several hours before he had to compete, he wasn't given a gift medal.  Seems we forgot the poor Georgian luger who lost his life and the family who lost a brother and son because appropriate safety precautions were overlooked.  Oh, Canada.
