On cats and field mice, the white footed variety: It is true, that the cat always bites the head off. And for some reason leaves me the headless carcass to find. Never eats the whole thing. Now, when it comes to bunny rabbits, I have found their heads, but no bodies. I know if the cat could talk, he'd say, ymmmm, rabbit, tastes just like chicken!

Athenas Mom,
Catching and eating field mice, moles, and ground squirrels is fairly common around here and the only thing I have had to do is check for parasites (tapes).
The things I have seen my dogs eat would turn your stomach, road kill, dead stinking fish from the river bank, garbage dumped out on the road side, last years deer remains drug from the woods, gorged ticks that have fallen off on the ground or pulled off by the dogs, and on occasion droppings from other animals.
I worry more about the kibble I feed.
Check for parasites, keep your vaccinations up to date, and feed your animals well.
You can't protect them from the world they live in and in my opinion doing so does more harm than good in the long run.
I read everyday about dogs dieing of cancer, dogs with allergies, dogs who cannot give birth without assistance, dogs who are put through major surgeries because of genetic defects, and dogs who suffer from what I can only call the ignorance of man.
A mouse in my dogs mouth doesn't strike fear in me in the least. I'm more concerned with people who will shoot a dog or run over one on the road, or the ass hole who will poison a dog on purpose, people who steal dogs.
I cannot argue some rodents are riddled with disease, but field mice from the country should not be as bad as something the cat drug in out of the alley.
You could always raise mice yourself, they reproduce fast and are easy to raise, good source of protein..lol
I had a snake once.....:)

My dog contracted Leptospirosis after eating a dead mouse in our yard. She had been vaccinated against it every year for 8 years and still got it, so don't think that if you're vaccinated you're safe. There are several different strains.
