What a subject! Mastiffs, Boarboels, Great Danes, etc. everyone hitting the nail on the head.
Our service dogs must have drive, stamina, speed, courage, and the ability to fight when they reach the bad guy. And this may take 50 feet or 1 mile. Intimidation ain't worth crap if all you have is some slobbering beast that can't catch his breath.
So, give me a GSD, Mal, Dutchie, Dobie, or Rotie - now they are more likely to get the job done and with plenty of intimidation.
Let the others guard the homes and estates it seems they excel there.

i must confess that i have not known many great danes, but two that i did encounter for a brief time were not even capable of schutzhund. back in the early 90's, we were training with a club of mostly gsds, but there were a few rotties, a rotty mix and these two great danes. after one of the danes blew up (in obedience) and attacked the handler, we did not see them anymore. not sorry to see them go.

Thanks everyone for all the replies... I dont see a great dane ever being a police dog.. just wanted to get others opinions on the matter...
