Phil Behun

If your friend is looking for one to "work" with, I wouldn't waste the time or money, they don't do very well.  The different varieties do well in different areas, Gronendaels work well in AKC obedience and agility as do the Tervurens.  You will see an occasional Tervuren working in French Ring in Europe or scattered here or there in Schutzhund but very rarely a Laekenois, they just don't have the right temperament.   If they are interested in just having a pet go right ahead, it'll be fine.

Phil,

It is not a friend who has asked for help. And no, they want the dog for a pet, not for working. But thanks for the information.

Phil,
The Lakenois from Mi border patrol is being used as an single purpose dog. I know this because they board them at the kennnel I work at and I am his groomer. Here is a link to my work and Atos is almost at the bottom of the page.

pat@winjammer.net    Pat Morgan in Mayville, MI.  Pat is a top importer and breeder of tervs, gronendael, and lackenois.  Her dogs are very correct and typey.  She excels in conformation, herding, obedience, agility, flyball, sledding, etc.  You name it and Pat has done it with her Belgians.  She also goes to France often and shows at the French Nationals.  I know all of this first hand.  She is a very reputable breeder with a true passion for the breed.

Good Luck!!

As far as them working....the good ones work very well, just like every other breed.  I had a import bitch sired by Opium v Krekebos, who won the French Nationals.

French National what?  Laekenois are rarely used for the biting sports ie French Ring, Belgian Ring (NVBK), RCI, SchH, IPO, KNPV because they just don't work well.  Maybe agility and AKC obedience like the Gronendael but the nerves and temperament are just not strong enough.  Sure once in a while one may pop up but even a blind squirrel finds a nut.  One exception does not make the rule and as a rule the work is not strong.

you can get all varieties in a breeding.....I've worked some Tervurens, Malinois, and  Groenendael in schutzhund.

French National Championship.  It is the national conformation show.

You must realize, the lackenois variety has a very small gene pool.  As in all varieties, working dogs tend to come out of certain lines, like Opium v Krekebos.  Again...the gene pool is small, which gives you a smaller number of working dogs.

Belgian Shepherds is the breed....varieties are the terv, gronendael, malinois, & lackinois.  Only in the US are they registed as different breeds in AKC.(UKC registers them as one breed, four varieities, and the shows are european style conformation shows.)  In AKC( Due to them being one breed,) generations upon generations of the one variety may be bred and another variety will pop up.  If using a French dog for stud, say it is a terv...once he is registered in the stud books with AKC, all dogs produced by that dog in the US can only be registered as tervs.  If a gronendael is imported sired by that terv, it will not be registered as a gronendael, due to the sire registered with AKC as a terv!!  This is all thanks to the AKC parent clubs and will probably never change!

I think the correct spelling is Laekenois (as spelled by Phil) not Lackenois or Lakenois.
