LAVK-9

Lukas- I had a black GSD and in certain times of the year he would get some tanish color on his back of his legs(front) and between his toes.He never got it anywhere else.He was black though like yours. Maybe it is a bit of sable in there from the parents cause mine's sire was a dark sable and the mother black.Maybe they are just super black sables lol
I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks. It wasn't anything I was worried about. I was just wondering if it was normal or if it was just something random occuring to my dog. I know his sire was black and his dam was black and tan. He just keeps getting lighter in the front and now in the back.

Kelli, How old is the dog? Have you noticed it before? Maybe it is a seasonal thing as well.I know my sable goes through color change.Drives me nuts cause he sheds like crazy!! Sucks since we moved out west cause he looks like crap with the dry weather he isn't as dark as he normaly gets in the winter.Plus it isn't the real winter that IL gets that he is use to. Have you changed where you were living?  The rest of your dog is so black.....I can't see the tan getting to be anymore. If it did that would be interesting.

Actually Molly is very knowledgeable with these markings. See if you can rephrase the topic to get her attention...

We havn't moved anywhere, just a lot of rainy weather. I guess we'll see in the summer if he still has it. He's always had tan between his toes but nothing further since he was a puppy. I thought it may have been because he had lost some fur to mange a while back and had just regrown tan but he hadn't lost any on his front legs. It would be quite interesting if it did go higher. There's little sparce hairs of it sprouting out every day it seems.

Just came to my mind.....Is there a DNA test that can tell you what color the dog truely is? Think I will start a thread about that.Get things back on dogs instead of all the drama.Although some how it will start up.

I have a 2yr old black female with the same color change lower legs and faintly around the vent.Became quite noticeable in the past few months.Dam was solid black, sire black and tan.Two pups in the litter also solid black, one black and tan.Wouls she still be considered black or bi-colored?I hope some breeders will advise.Would a DNA kit identify?

Lukas, I do believe you can expect more tan. The black between the toes can mean she's got a black parent somewhere. Again, Molly will see this thread soon, hopefully, and shed some light on the matter,.
