"I stopped training at a little over 1 year-long story. It would be far worse now."

Do tell!

Like DebiSue,  I too have a custom leather harness with a padded breast plate. Great for all agitation and tracking too. If you find that you need more control, then you can always clip onto their collar.

For puppies, I like the non-restrictive nylon harnesses. They also have a collar on, but go everywhere on their harness. I think it gives pups more confidence and they are more inclinded to explore their surroundings.

Pharaoh

OK Keith-short version

My three story high deck had to be rebuilt sucking up all my reserve cash - a woman sued me for 700,000.00 because she was on Cymbalta (history of law suits and back injuries), fell in a parking lot near the rear of my car, it took over a year to get rid of her - thanks to the economy, three clients went inactive, big hit to income - the tenant from hell had to be evicted - I do believe there are some lesser disasters that I can't remember.  Oh, my insurance agent informed me that Pharaoh is covered for liability unless he is attack trained.

When you own a house in Marin, it is like wearing a target on your back. I have been in my house for twenty one years and even with the real estate crash, the market here is still moving and property values are still sky high.  People who like to sue think that if you own a house here and a nice car, you must be filthy rich.  I am not.  I used to be comfortable, but now my budget squeaks.  I am also afraid of being sued.

So, now my house is going on the market.  I want to live someplace with a nice climate and low housing prices with a flat backyard.  I am thinking of Northern Arizona.  First I have to sell this house.

It would really be nice if there is a nice schutzhund club nearby.  Any ideas?

Hi Keith,

Initially when I started SchH, I used a wide collar and sometimes even a fur saver, depending on the dog. However, over the years, my practice changed. I believe, in general, that a properly padded and fitted harness is the best thing to work agitation for many of the same reasons people have already stated. I would like to add however, that harnesses too can cause injury if the handler or the helper is not skilled and/or the dog is really active. So in the end, the potential is certainly there to hurt a dog, even in a harness.

I like to use nylon harnesses on pups when they are young. However I dont use a harness once they started bite work. I found that both of my dogs where jumping into the harness and had rather bad landings on the line. I am using a soft 2 inch nylon flat collar and when they jump for a "miss" the dynamics let them land on their feet. None of my dogs is/was on a pole but me holding the line. I would consider a harness if we would have to use a pole as the chain does not give a tent of an inch way and the stop is therefore very abrupt.

I think that a lot of it depends on the dog.  For my large male ACDs I use a leather agitation collar collar but for my bitch I have found it not to be effective due to her small size.  I use a nylon harness that was made a person who specializes primarily in walking/freight harnesses for pitbulls.  It has her name "Frost" embroidered on one side and "Bite" embroidered on the other :-p

They would not be something I would use on a full size GSD but it would probably work great for a puppy.

As most know i bought one for young Izzy as she pulls so hard i thought it may save her neck but the Helper gave me a right royal ripping off and said not to put it on her again
He is in a way correct there is no control of the dog at all specally the Pup
So now i have a Medium Harness used once and a Large Harness brand new and will not be used at all, The make is
eurojoe of Belgium
tonight Izzy went on Protection for the second time this time with a leather collar, She pulled like a Tank and She covers the ground at lightning speed albeit only short runs at this time, Not because she is mine but i have never seen a Pup move so fast, By Standers gave a 'Whoa; as she left me

Steve1- I don't know why you would have taken that from the helper. The use of a harness can be a good thing for a young dog to build up some drive and confidence of hot being restrained by the neck.I am sure that she would pull just the same and maybe more. I would question that helper as to why .Maybe he isn't experienced enough to work a dog that is on a harness. It does take talent and experience to catch a dog right and even some of the best make a mistake.Maybe he doesn't feel he can catch a dog that is on a harness. There are reasons to use it for him to just shut it out....I would look for a more educated and seasoned helper. The one I worked with competes at high levels and has had some dogs on a harness or on a collar depending on the dog.My female had to be on one cause she was too obedient on a collar and was more free with a harness.Seriously... you pay the money for the helper to help you.He shouldn't have given you a "right royal ripping off".To me he sounds like a prick and a bit too arrogant for his own good...or anyone elses. JMO

I use an agitation harness ever since years ago when an agitation collar caused broken blood vessels in a previous dogs  eyes from him straining against it .  I have the Ultra Leather agitation harness  from Dog Sport Gear now and I really like it:
http://www.dogsportgear.com/Ultra_Leather_Dog_Harness.htm  It's very well made and one of my favorite things about it is the buckles are very big, making it easy to put on and off, even in the dark, even with a dog who wants more than anything to get on the field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sueincc- I think I borrowed that kind of harness. It was a nice one. Thanks for posting that cause I would like to get one as my male likes to back out of collars.I don't like having it so tight. Now that you mentioned the blood vessle thing I could see that happening to my dog the way he gets!!
