The same thing was happening in CT until someone killed one on a highway with a car.
In the following article a horse was injured and the owner got a blood sample off a gate and sent it for DNA analysis, it's a MOUNTAIN LION and they are still reluctant to admit it.

Proving the mountain lions return is still tough. My GF is a firm believer and swears she has heard them, too.
That poor horse! Clearly it wanted to escape something dangerous! Officials don't want to consider the possibility of breeding pairs, that would lead to sheer panic.
