I just got sent the upcoming HS School lunch menu and pricing list.

Board of Education  - Approved for 2016-2017 - Cafeteria Prices

Breakfast-

Basic Breakfast – (cereal bar) - $2.00

Breakfast Sandwich (larger portion) - $2.75

Specialty Bar (omelets, pancakes, waffles) - $3.25

Smoothies - $2.25 (small), $3.25 (large)

Lunch-

Basic Lunch (entrée, two sides and milk) - $3.25

Special Offerings:  Grill, Pizza, and Creation Station - $5.00

Boars Head Deli sandwiches, ½ sandwich and soup or salad - $5.50

Salad Bar - $0.43 per ounce

Sushi - $6.99

SUSHI? ...almost $7!  Was that Michele Obama's idea? LOL 

When I was in HS, I ate tuna salad on a hardroll everyday, sometimes I now wonder about having ingested too much mercury! I am sure it wasn't albacore. I think it cost 60¢. Same as a gallon of gas and pack of smokes!

Now the kids are vaping in the bathrooms! 

Times sure have changed! 

 

Thank goodness they are trying to get in healthy meals.  The high school meals I grew up with like you Beetree where atrocious health wise.  Charging that much is ridiculous.  Most families will not be able to afford it.  Now school lunches from other countries are so much healthier.

 

I am thinking they are offering the smoothies now because they got tired of seeing all the apples and oranges thrown away and untouched, when they were mandated and automatically put on the lunch trays.

How do you know other countries lunches are healthier?

I looked up schools in my area and they serve nothing like this. WTF? And the prices are no where near these prices. What school is this? Must be a wealthy area. Sushi, SMH.

Public HS in suburbia. Nice area, certainly not the same Gold Coast standards of Westport and Greenwich.

SMH at Sushi, too. Kids do seem to like it, though. My own included. My youngest really complained about the awful lunches being served last year. I guess somebody decided it is better to spend more on something the kids will actually eat, instead of spending less just to feed the garbage pail.

I remember paying like .90 for lunch in school. Give them a lounge with x-box and they won't need or want to eat. We hire a lot of younger people at work and not many of them know how to work. Although they are very good at working their phones. SMH. Our schools should teach work ethics because it is obvious parents aren't doing the job.

Move to Hartford. They include rat droppings for free.

My daughter has always brought a lunch from home. It's less costly and better quality. When I was in HS I would sneak out and walk home to eat lunch. This was before schools had to be locked up like fortresses.

Those prices look expensive for poorer people but I wonder what those food services charge per meal for kids who get free lunches. I wouldn't be surprised if it's basically the same amount. And they are serving a bunch of canned and frozen junk.

Hartford? No thank you. You move to Hartford if you like it so much. I've lived in this same cow town for almost 25 years. I don't see me leaving any time soon.

I made lunches from home when the kids were younger. Since I don't get up at the crack of dawn with them so as to make the 6:30 am bus pickup, and they don't want to make their own lunches, that in itself is their choice.

There is still the time honored act of lunch trading that goes on. Turns out a good friend who follows Hindu eating traditions, often was quite ameliorated with their agreed arrangements.

We have our own rats in Suburbia. People don't want to talk about it, but the wood rats have become a problem with all the suburban sprawl building that displaces them.

When I was in HS, (upperclassman) we used to get in our cars and drive down Whalley Ave. to New Haven and go to McDonalds or BK for lunch and a smoke.

I always thought we were about the same age, GSDAdmin. I must be older than you, after all, if your HS lunch was 90¢. Especially since everything costs more in NE.  But, I am sure you do know who said, "Exit, stage left (or right)!
 

Bee, it could have been a dollar or so. IDK, because I used to be rather a picky eater so I always ate a slice of pizza or a roll.

Beetree, I have relatives in other countries and their children go to school,  I have friends from other countries and they remember their school lunches and are appalled at what their children are getting for school lunches here.
