Agar love your story. But could you imagine if the "authorities" got ahold of that picture?? "omg that woman keeps her children in a cage!!!!"

policemom- I thought about that too after the fact. lol In fact my husband joked with me and said he was gonna take it to Children and Youth Services if I didn't behave myself and be "nice" to him. lol The picture is cute though, the kids are laughing and being silly. Wonder if I could fit the hubby in there when he misbehaves??? hmmm....now that's a thought. lol

"A crate is necessary here for sure, but that's not going to fix it, just prevent it"
Agreed. The dog needs to learn. Crating is not "discipline", it only prevents. If the dog does something bad, make him know it.
And not all dogs will do the same thing. Different dogs have different tendencies.
Waiting until the dog is 2 and then "testing" to see if he can roam? I disagree. How has he learned to not behave badly?
I may not be any expert, but I've had 2 German Shepherds who had free run of the house all day - work, sleep, etc - by the time they were 1.5 yrs old. Latter being my current dog, who had major separation anxiety issues and tore things to pieces, most notably my mattresses (and that's just in my room, not whole house). The older dog had run of the house by the time she was less than half that age; very tractable with no character "issues" like Tara. Mostly she just needed to hold her bladder (Tara never went potties inside the house, BTW; funny).

Wow, I am surprised and pleased to see so much support for crating. My 5 year old Nenz has wrecked two tv remotes, one irreplaceable, since I quit crating him but I feel safer with him not crated. We live in a high crime area. Spunky is 7 months and runs to her crate as soon as she comes inside. We walk 2 to 4 miles a day, sometimes 6 or 8, and I am training her to pull as we live on a big hill. I have also started her backpacking stuff from the store. Anyway, some people are shocked that I crate her, although sometimes I fall asleep and forget to shut the door. I wake up the next morning and she is still in there! She is used to only being in the living room and if I call her to go to another part of the house she just sits there and won't move. I try to walk both dogs at least 2 miles a day because the Dog Whisperer says that is the minimum required to keep dogs happy. He also says dogs need exercise, discipline, and love, in that order.

Eight miles is a lot more mileage than a 7-month pup should be doing.

When I first started showing I bought a dog from a breeder with 2 very unruly children. We used to put them inside the dog crates at shows. I doubt one could get away with that today. These kids also ate Milkbones and drank from the dogs' water bowels when no one was looking.
