We used to take our older female shepherd camping every summer when I was younger,  all of our camping was done in Michigan, primarily the upper Peninsula, (highly recommend Porcupine Mountains area).  We never had any major issues getting her into any campground, and we met quite a few other dogs (never forget that huge czech male pup we met once...gorgeous).  The most notable problems that I can remember is how many times our female shepherd was attacked by various jack russell terriers,  over the years she must have been assaulted by at least a dozen of those rascals.   Beware of owners who go camping with their jack russell terriers and leave them offleash!!!

We had an incident some years ago at a favorite doggy swimming hole, our girl was fetching sticks from the water and at one point she went down to the water to get a stick and started screaming,  we finally got her back on shore and found a fishing hook imbedded in the soft tissue of her flank/tummy area, the hook left an 8 inch cut on her stomach before it had lodged itself.  (she made a full recovery in short time)
