If the dog in the OP's question is a working mix, surely its colour is irrelevent, taking into account the low incidence and usually mild effect of blue alopecia ? It isn't very likely to have ALL blue offspring, if it is used for breeding, either (on observation of the incidence rates of colour 'faults' /mutations coming up in purebred GSDs, where the colour has always been acknowledged to exist). So unless the Mali (or Mali-mix) people go the route, as some GSD people unfortunately have, of knowingly using the blue genetics to deliberately produce an unaturally high incidence of them for profit, I contend there isn't VERY much reason for the OP not to breed, IF (and ONLY if) their dog has everything else going for it. I don't think anyone here doubts how members including myself feel about indiscriminate breeding with dogs which are lacking in other (and for my view, more important) attributes than the colour.

Hund - no worries. The information about the D-Locus gene for blue and the genetic inheritance is interesting reading.

I realize that many breeding decisions are based on things other than colour, but in some instances colour can have a direct genetic link to health problems of differing severity.

Maybe that is "fake news"; I had no reason to disbelieve it, since I do not automatically assume bitches to be inferior workers. I am not trying to push this information on the world; if it can be shown it is a male dog, so be it.
My questions were rhetorical; I am reminded yet again that other nationalities have trouble understanding British satire. To those who said that too large a dog probably wouldn't work in those circumstances, I completely agree with you. I also believe that this dog was probably NOT one with the sort of nature we have been discussing here and on other contemporary threds, since those dogs (however one wishes to describe them) appear to be 'as rare as hens teeth'.
Only the oversensitive would see the words 'average patrol dog' as an insult; I hold such dogs in very high regard, and often feel it a great pity they do not seem to be 'dog enough' for some contributors here. I know service handlers who are quite happy with such a description of their dog, as ordinary, because for them that dog is the best fellow officer in the world and they are proud of both its skills and its adaptability.

If average is good enough for you or those you know who train or handle dogs, great, more power to them.
I can also be proud of an above average dog and be very happy with its above average skills and such. Have a great evening.

i meant "extreme jumping" and i didn't say "extreme dogs".
are you gonna sent that dogs to highrise building by climbing walls or distract perpetrators by jumping over their heads?
saying "malinization of GSD" i mean not x-breeding but rather selection of specimens for mating, who in physical appearance
looks more like mali than german shepherd - extremely lean, light-boned with thin legs, pretty narrow, fox alike, head and mouth.

Also, many mals have impressive bitework due to their high prey/fightingdrive, but some of these dogs are also rather weak and soft but it doesn´t really matter because they still are successfull at competitions. In a way I guess it´s sad that people abandon the GSD because they want an easy to train impressive dog for sport and then the malinois is hard to beat. A GSD of more policedog type seems less attractive for competition and hence the malinois is nowadays often so common in sports. The GSD are still more common when it comes to competitions for policedogs thou so I don´t think this only has to do with the GSD are unhealthy and the best GSD are "not even close" as apple and BM says here;) With that said both breeds seems to have their shares of problems, healthwise and in character, if GSDs really needed some malinois infusion to better the breed I wouldn´t hvae anything against it, if not it´s hard selection within the breeds pure lines that is necessary to improve health and workingability.

I don't know what it's like there, but if you can volunteer (or work) with your police K9 unit as a quarry (decoy) then that will help you learn about LE K9.
Oops, wrong thread.

@ Johan wih all respect the GSD factory in Sweden I don.t take any serious have seen some of those dogs don.t impressed what makes them any special above the best X malinois here , In Holland have seen and decoyed enough GSD and select dogs for police to make a good opinion, I don.t like to be arrogant but some of the best trainers ,knowledge K9 .s comes from Holland many police departments all over the world buy our dogs and went our knowledge about our training. The GSD is out of the game for LE duty for many years here you can ask every police K9 hander why they prefer the Malinois/DS ,same as Special Forces. Johan here is for team GSD his opinion so be it this is GSD forum.Make a discussion on a KNPV forum on facebook would be more interesting there opinions about GSD and with some real hardcore LE trainers there.
