Hi guys, I am stumped. I have a 2 year old male with one distended testicle. So, I want to neuter my dog and the vet says. . . because he's over 75 lbs. and he has to surgically remove the other testicle the cost is for the operation something like $500.00. But if we give the boy even better care somehting like $600.00 with pain meds after the surgery. I was like blown away at the cost. . . Like my female I spayed was $250.00 with after care and stitches being removed. So, what gives? What is the normal cost for neutering and is this vet like grabbing for my bucks or is this right on? Sorry, being a New Guy on the block got to tell you I feel like going to the pound next time around where all this is cared for beforehand.

I would say "shop around" if you can. Cost depends on the vet in my experience.

We had a cryptorchid pup that went to a pet quality home. The new owners lived in the ritzi part of Atlanta and their vet quoted them over $900 for the surgery. I called my vet less than an hour from Atlanta and the same surgery was under $300. By driving to my vet the the guy saved over $10 a mile. Definitely shop around.

Geez, it isn't like I am some Cheapo. I have lots of animals. The horses that get gelded on the farm the vet comes to US and does everything including aftercare. . .and less than this dog I rescue with the one testicle. So, I say something does not figure right. What is the cost for neutering a normal dog with both testicles distended? And what is the difference with the one not distended testicle? Anyone know what the norm price is? We are going to call animal control and find out more. But damn! this is important information, don't you thinks? We have the dog now and he was purchased as pet, but don't you think this was important for the seller to tell? Pet or no pet. . . And yes, our Cheapo is loved as a family pet.

There are, of course, sometimes big differences in vet costs. $500 sounds a bit excessive, but not much. Do not forget that this is not a normal neutering if the vet must go looking for the second testicle. Sometimes it is easy to find, sometimes not and sometimes not even there. Depending on where it is, the dog may even end up with a much larger incision and one in the belly area. It is usually MUCH easier to neuter such a pup at an early age. As for pain medications, the cost of a pain medication injection post surgery should not be more than the cost of a few injections, and/or a patch. Often the medication given for pain in animals is Fentamine and it is not cheap. There are low cost spay and neuter clinics and you can definitely call other vets, tell them that this is a dog with a single descended testicle and shop around for price. For my money however, I would be looking first at the skill and experience of the vet and clinic. Good luck. And yes, for people who want a good pet, going to a shelter is sometimes a good solution. However, even there it will cost you a few bucks to adopt.

Thanks guys, Not the dogs fault for sure. But what the hell is a cryptochid? Is that what this boy is? Well, he is simply missing one of the sacks in the back. Made him not breed worthy. We got a good dog and he has been AOK. Reading material, we find recommendation for neutering. We don't have any females in our area for breeding. Is it OK to keep this dog as he is. Sack in the $600.00 and forget the whole topic?

Cryptorchid aka monorhchid aka as "missing one of the sacks in the back" as you put it. If there is a testicle that didn't descend it could become cancerous, therefore it should be removed. It is also possible that it never formed in which case you could leave him as he is. Also cryptorchids are sometimes fertile but it is best not to breed them as the condition may be hereditary.

Hi, I had a boxer with the same condition..the "one sack in back" thing...they can do an ultrasound and find if there actually is another testi for sure, and I too was told it could turn cancerous if not taken care of...it cost me $450 and yes I would use pain meds..think of how you would feel... On the other hand my 99lb. dog got neutered and with pain meds and all it was around $150...I don't know what part of the country you are in, but they have some great clinics that don't charge and arm and a .......leg.... good luck

Wow! I can understand now why people wont want to neuter their pets... because it costs to damn much. Sorry but over 200 dollars is a rip off in my own opinion. I would search around and try to find a "Non profit" org that can help you to neuter your dog with a discount price... Just check out theses awesome prices from what the humane society is offering... http://www.humanesocietymiami.org/spay_neuter.htm It amazes me how theses so called vets claim they love animals but only service the ones who have money... and for the rest who cannot afford treatment with their dogs/cats,etc can screw off... sorry but it bugs me :( especially since i heard my friend had to put down his dog because he couldnt afford the treatment that was needed :( He treated his dogs like kids too :( another sad story from another greedy vet.

my vet is amazing we talk about this all the time....he is a VERY GOOD vet and has been myne for 8 years...he will spay for 90 but I can't remember what a neuter was (I don't really keep males that will not be breeding animals.)but I will ask him today as I am going ther to get shipping papers on a puppy. The cost normally has to do with what the vet thinks that people will pay...if he can get 500 why not, if he know in his area he will only 100 then that is what they will charge...def look around, as that seems like alot of money on just a neuter, even if he has to go in for the other one.
