Can't breeders who advertize in the Market Place please also state the price of the advertized dog?

by flagbike on 24 January 2005 - 23:01

Here! Here!......... How about where the dog is located so one can add shipping costs. Also the pedigree. Trying to consider purchasing a dog is like pulling teeth. List all the important info the FIRST time!

I agree! As a person who is trying to learn as much as possible about this wonderful breed I often window shop to see what is out there, to learn more about confirmation, bloodlines, going rates for pups, titled adults, etc. Many breeders post "serious inquiries only" since I am just window shopping I would never think to bother them with prices but it would be nice for everyone to list the prices with the ad.

it would be great if the Stud Dog category was used for males at stud, not males for sale. there's a separate category for that....

and a picture....I don't go any further than reading what they have here if they don't put a pic...I don't want to waist thier or my time....if I don't like how the dog looks and can't find the pedigree easy enough I move on...

The issue of a price on a pup is particularly difficult to pin down, especially when a litter is just born. For example, I have a very nice, several day old litter out of Kevin Murrtal and an outstanding V rated, excellent working show line female. IF a pup develops nicely and is clearly going to be verygood or outstanding in conformation, temperament AND shows an ability and desire to work, the pup will probably be pretty expensive. IF a pup has two of those three attributes present, I would expect the pup to be priced lower. There is also the issue to consider of the cost of the litter (stud fees, vet care, travel to stud) and also most people like me who have spent thousands of hours and dollars training and titling and showing and getting the breed survey etc., usually end up pricing the litter higher. So, the best way to deal with any person offering a litter is to write to them IF YOU ARE SERIOUSLY considering buying a pup. Then you can find out from most breeders, once the pup is old enough, exactly what the pup will cost. I personally have an expected range of price, but final price will not be decided for several more weeks, and, depending on how long I keep a given pup to see how it is developing, of course, the price could go up or down or remain as originally priced. As for flight costs, obviously it depends on where the dog is coming from and going to, but a good rule of thumb is this: For flights in the US, cost is usually a minimum of $300-500. For flights coming from Europe, depending on how many changes of airlines etc., flight costs range from a minimum of $600 or so to more than $1000. It gets much more expensive if the breeder uses a pick-up and delivery service to get the dog from the breeder to the airport. Usually that charge is minimum $1-2 Euro per km.

Just wanted to chime in about the cost of shipping. I just received my pup and paid $175 for shipping into Denver International. The pup came from Montana but the price would have been the same from Oregon or Washington. I checked the other two states just because originally that is where the pup might have come from.

You are right for $175 you can ship a pup all over the USA but you have to buy a crate, the vet bill for a health certificate and lose a half a day going to the airport andd back.

$380 from Alaska

We all understand that shipping prices will differ from one location to the next especially when one wishes to import from Europe with the high exchange rate on the Euro. However, all breeders, myself included, have a minimum and maximum price for pups and older dogs, depending on their age and development. If you advertize a litter you can state your price range whereas with a single dog it id easy enough to determine the price!
