My dogs don't have worms and all animals get dewormed routinely. I just got back from my GP and have been lucky enough to somehow get hookworm. I had a weird rash and that was the end result. I garden a bit and of course handle raw meat a lot so the GP thinks I need to get my grubby hands out of my mouth and into some antibacterial hand gel...

My question, now that I have your attention with my TMI, is have any of you ever contracted worms of any kind from raw feeding (or gardening) and if you think I should deworm all the animals immediately since I am deworming myself (and my thrilled husband).

They all got Drontaled beginning of this month (and the puppies got something stronger-forget what it was but it was also for heartworm). Don't want to overdo it on the deworming for the animals if I can help it but as my vet is closed I just thought I would ask here. Puppies didn't have a great reaction to the vacs and deworming so I'd like to avoid it if possible.

Thanks for sharing my lovely story with me.:DAny help much appreciated.

Wow! Where was the "ground itch", the rash that should indicate point of entry? You are in UK right? So these HWorms are different than US Hookworms. If your Dr. can give you the exact name of the particular nasty you have, you might be able to determine if it is the kind that can infect dogs and people. It could just be the type that infects people.

Two different types are most common where I think you are,  and usually transmitted differently. Skin vs. oral. So, you need to play detective a bit, first.

So sorry for you! I think contracting internal parasites has to be a horror of mine!!!

by magdalenasins on 14 May 2012 - 18:05

Thanks! I guess they treat them all with the same stuff as other worms just for longer (3 days) so I am just going to take the pills and suck it up (and wash my hands more). The rash is on my stomach! Maybe from puppy feet jumping up? We live near a school and kids are plague carriers lol. Unless I ingested eggs from biting my nails...Who knows. I had ringworm this year (my rescue cat thank you!) and Lyme's disease a few years ago too. I should be taken out back behind a barn probably. :D It was bad enough playing detective in the toilet (UK toilets are really deep so it's like spelunking) and then putting on a glove and... you get the picture. I didn't even do a fecal at doctor's they took one look at the rash and were like here you go! Maybe it's common here now? My husband is thrilled with the details so I thought I'd share them here lol. Just wondered if I shouldn't re-deworm the animals but I think since I did 2 weeks ago they should be fine.

Well, it would seem if it were from contaminated ground, you could get it from the puppy feet.

So, do you think your ground is contaminated or did you take the dogs to other areas that they could have picked this up from?

If it were me, i would treat everyone and every pet, but I did just explain I have a horror of contracting internal parasites. Believe me, while I was taking the medicine, it would be a very long three days......!

(Oh, and make sure any of your fertilzer doesn't contain human waste.)

by magdalenasins on 14 May 2012 - 18:05

The fertilizer I use is already prepotted in with the plants so who knows. It was why i wondered as I did just pat down some seeds a few days ago, around the time of symptoms. The dogs don't go anywhere weird but there is a school nearby and the parents use our driveway to park and wait for school to get out so lots of kids running all over. I did take one dog down the road right next to where the school is on a shortcut from the park so will avoid that place (can't really avoid our parking lot). I know what you mean about a long 3 days just knowing they are there is making me itch all over.

I've always wormed myself, the hubby and the kids when I've wormed the dogs....   (Hubby knows and has a bit of a fit about it, but he's never caught me worming him... yet!! LOL)

It is not unusual for humans to get a run of worms as we all have hands on tons of pups and tons of breeding box and dogs in our laps, while we eat a sandwich and worm eggs fall out all over everywhre.

Your dog licks his DIERREAR and then he licks you ??>  YOU let pups kiss you ???   guess where they have had their noses??

YOu can go to the Health FOOD STORE AND BUY  dewormers and all breeders usually take them..

Yes, I , HAVING  bred dogs for 39 years, Cocker spaniels first then the GSD< and the knowledge I had was to always be prepared to find out  I had swallowed an egg or two from a clean environment.

IF you handle a lot of pups and dogs, it is not unusual.

Farmers have the same percentage of infestation.

People who eat a lot of garlic and a lot of natural greens and veggies , and fruits probably get rid of them naturally.

WORMWOOD , is one of the pills people take.

Ivemec has pills that humans take to get rid of the  Tapeworm which is usually the one humans come up with.

HOOKS are out of the dirt we work in and have our feet on...the ground..especially if you are barefoot SALLY..

then you somehow get it to you hand or mouth when you drink your drink you left sitting on the table or the ground...or the sandwich you ate and did not wash your hands..or you wiped you face with the back of your hand.....real easy to happen.

YR

NO BIGGY.

Many thousands of kids get pin worms...you use pyrantel piamote to rid that easily..liquid or pills.

When we lived in Hawaii, and went around barefoot 90% of the time, we were wormed 2x a year as routine protocal.....LOL.

Yes, the thought of having worms is disgusting, but up to 80% of humans have them and don't know any better.....

Wacky, thanks for all the information. I also just had pointed out to me I was volunteering at a cat rescue on Saturday (around when the rash started) and handling a lot of different cats (though that seems to be the one time I actually USE antibacterial gel). I wouldn't be surprised if it was hand to mouth dirt related, pups are always rolling around in grass outside and I am petting them and biting my nails or touching my face. Thanks again. Deworming pills taste nasty, why do they make them chewable lol. I used to take garlic regularly maybe I should start again. I do use juice cleanses pretty regularly just been too busy to juice lately.
