Hi

Wondering if anyone here has given their dog Colmicalm or any other type of dog "Prozac" for anxiety etc.

Even if you went for a more natural remedy, please share your story.  I'm very interested.  Thanks in advance!

What's the dog doing to need Clomicalm?

if your dog cannot relax - well, you have a mal.
they need to be tired to chill.

Is it a general anxiety?  Is it separation anxiety?  Any meds have to go in conjunction with training/behavior mod.

I have clients whose dogs are on various anti-depressants for anxiety.  Some have said it made a difference and helped.  Others have said it did not help.  If it helps, it helps, and if it doesn't than you can wean them off.  I believe most medications should be weaned off eventually whenever possible.

As far as natural remedies, L-theanine helps & DAP helps, studies show it works in some dogs.  Some acute anxiety can be helped with a Thundershirt.  Rescue Remedy does not work.

WEll here we go.got an ache , pain ,feeling run down, anxiety got ya?  YOU NEED DRUGS to not really to help solve the problem but to cover it up and to line that drug companies pocket, but watch out for
the nasty side affect could cause vomiting, diarrahea ,suicidel thought, incontients,Ect: Ect:Ect: Sound like a TV add YES! but just from your local vet. I wonder what that dog is feeling like on those drugs.
   Anti-drug you bet...

Thank you Doberdoodle and 4mals2sheps, I appreaciate you just answering the question!  I prefer going the more natural route, with DAP or (I've heard) milk protein.  I think I may try DAP and a thunder shirt.

Yes of course any drug will be paired with behaviour modification.  One can't depend on the drug alone.

I also agree with Doberdoodle about Rescue Remedy not working.  It can work in mild cases but not for moderate to high cases of anxiety.

For those  who wish to know the full reason to why I've started this post in the first place, please pm.  I'd be more than happy to share issue but need to do so privately.

Thanks

This is just from my own personal experience with prescription narc-based drugs (anesthesia, pain meds and ritalin when I was a kid for ADD)
They don't work for me like they are supposed to, I feel like total crap when I'm given anything narc-based.  Nausea, no appetite, lethargy, depression, achy-crappy flu-like feeling (and they are not effective for me as a pain killer)
So I strenuously avoid medications whenever possible.
(btw, I have no idea if colmicalm is narc-based, but I know most anxiety drugs are)

There are herbs that help; catnip tea, chamomile, lavendar, etc. are good calming agents, both in tea form and as aromatherapy.  Also a big meaty raw beef soup bone goes a long ways with a dog

Thanks EuroShepherd, I don't want to use any drugs until it's a last possible resort.  Just doing my research :)

All my dogs get raw meaty bones.  I find knuckle bones work best!  However, they can't be used outside the house, where the issue lies...

Both of the dogs I adopted from a local shelter were on Colmicalm when they moved in here.  The female often threw up after eating... a change in foods, and recognizing MegaE once she was here, we were  able to stop the meds.  The second dog was semi feral, with some training and socialization work were also able to stop his medication.
I've had dogs who needed meds durring thunderstorms and such, generally used a low dosage of Ace or a med similar to Xanax to reduce anxiety.  Nobody's needed perminate full time medication once we figured out why things were happening.
