Red Sable

by Red Sable on 09 November 2011 - 22:11

I don't like it.  I'm trying to jog the horses, and they go nuts everytime a rifle goes off.  I just see a swarming sea of orange.  The dogs are barking constantly.
Nice weather, and I can't even go for a walk and enjoy it.
I can't wait until this week is over.

I'm tired of it too!  It's been wonderful weather here in the low 70s/high 60s.....Start walking the dogs......or let the dogs outside and a loud gun shot goes off in the distance.  None of my dogs care about it except for one....Sierra.  She freaks out when she hears a gun shot or loud firework go off and runs straight for the house.  If the door isn't shut all the way she knocks it open and goes and gets in a crate.  Needless to say I don't do fireworks, nor do I ever shoot a gun here.  My males act like nothing is going on though.  Back in July someone was shooting off fireworks like crazy behind our field and Buck was just standing in the back yard watching it.

Drives me crazy too, sitting in the woods early a.m. waiting for that deer and comes a person hiking or riding a horse. Dang it people stay out of the woods during hunting season. lol

I hate for our safty sake having to stay out of woods we own because of trespassing hunter with no permission to hunt the grounds.

Trespassing hunters make great targets, accidents happen all the time.
Seriously if someone is trespassing have him arrested.
Among hunters many go places they shouldn't, the trick is to do no harm and not be detected.
Sometimes hunters might bump into each other in the woods, you nod and keep on walking..lol

Well, I understand BOTH sides of the story. Yes it is WONDERFUL to take a walk in the woods/fields with your 4-legged BFF. Nothing like riding your favorite mount in the same. Best yet, taking your ride with your faithful companion traveling jauntily at your horse's side, or ranging slightly ahead to make sure the way is safe and clear.  But BOY are those venison steaks, roasts, and Bambi-burgers good too.

There are plenty of hunters who utilize private property (maybe even lease it for hunting) or public grounds (posted for hunting) to enjoy their pass-time too (or just to get away from the spouse and kids). I have horses, I have dogs, and I have 25 acres. My spouse hunts, and my son is learning. I stay out of the woods.

Point is? We are permitted to walk and ride 365 days a year. Here in Ohio, the absolute earliest you can hunt (squirrel) starts Sept 1, and the last day to hunt deer is Feb 5. The amount of time they can 'bang-bang! Shoot 'em up' is even less Oct 17-22, Nov 19-20 (youth hunt only), Nov 28-Dec 4, Dec 17-18, and Jan 7-10. I would imagine that most people are worried about deer season which while in Ohio it runs from Sept 24- Feb 5, the MAJORITY of that time is BOW, not gun.Your complaint seems to be the NOISE, not the danger associated with hunting.  Bows are not loud, but put a hole in you just the same.

There are PLENTY of Parks (State and National) where hunting is NOT ALLOWED. Why not expand your territory for the limited time the hunters are in the woods and fields attempting to get that deer that got away last year. If you really feel you MUST pursue your pass time in areas where hunting is allowed.... wear your orange vest, put a vest on your dog, get a couple of bells and enter the "swarming sea of orange".

Hunting season SUCKS! Plain and simple. Here in New York, we have weeks of it.
The way I see it is, you get a bunch of guys, that don't know crap about the woods ,OR GUNS, that don't GIVE A CRAP about MY respect and love of nature and the land "I LIVE ON", that just intrude and invade my life and my space.
There is nothing more infuriating than taking that walk the woods and finding that  Big Buck I watched all summer eating with the horses in the pasture(s) headless body, lying in the woods, because a ""hunter""needed that wall mounting, or having to guard my dogs with my life from an ignorant, trigger happy ass****.
We live here all the time. Yeah, against most peoples ideals, my dogs have free range of my property. They know their boundries (for those that need an occassional reminder, I have ACRES of electric fence).
We have to change and adjust our entire routine to accomidate these people. Last year I was within inches of being shot in the head, in my front yard from a stray bullet.
State police told me I have to expect that this time of year. WHY THE HELL SHOULD I HAVE TO EXPECT THAT, in my front yard because some people just don't give a hoot????
So yeah, it's that time of the year.

I did not say I am anti hunter. I hunt. I own ground to hunt on. Most hunters are idiots and are dangerous. My land is posted. I have been shot at while hunting pinned down behind a tree on MY hunting land. I harvest responsibly and eat what I kill, most hunting out there do not. The ones who do not have their own ground think they can do anything on anyone elses grounds. I have owned land in four states. The majority of the local hunters in each make it dangerous for anyone to be in the woods during hunting season even if they are also hunting IMO.

Over the years I have become creative in ensuring that trespassing hunters do not return to commit the crime twice.
