Let me explain what the individual mandate means using myself as a bad example: I was self-employed for many, many years and paid paid for my own health insurance. As I got older, my premiums increased every year until I decided it was too much to pay for health insurance that I never used anyway and let it expire. Fortunately, I wasn't involved in any serious accident nor did I experience any catastrophic health episode while uninsured but I could have been and if I had been, I'd have probably been forced to file bankruptcy leaving the health care system no alternative but to increase everyone else's costs to pay for me. During that time I was living in a 3,500 square foot house in an affluent neighborhood and driving a $75,000.00 Mercedes with a $900.00 monthly payment. I could have easily continued to pay my health insurance premiums in addition to my mortgage and car payments; I just didn't want to...so I didn't.

This law penalizes people like me.

Unless you have an income well into six figures and simply choose to spend your money on luxury items rather than taking care of your responsibilities first, this health care "mandate" will not affect you in the least.  In fact, it will help almost everyone else besides people like I was and provide health care for tens of millions of previously uninsured low-income people while simultaneously reducing the federal deficit.

What, exactly, are you people bitching about?

 

A tax is levied when you purchase something - not when you refuse to purchase something. LOL

Amazing how all traitors just fall in line. It's almost too easy.

But ya, American is delivered yet another kick to the face.

How many more can she take ?

GOT MILK ?

I think it is so pathetic that so many people are so angry and against the working poor and others having hospitalization.  I, me, my, mine.... my insurance coverage will change.... my costs will change...  as long as I have good coverage for me and my family, well, the heck with the rest of you!  I got mine, now you go get yours. 

I am tired of paying taxes out of my pitiful, tiny paycheck to fund wars, subsidize hospitalization for those who won't work/politicians, and other wasteful spending.  It is about time that those that work will have access to affordable health care instead of doing without.  It is just a shame that it is being met with so much opposition.  It easily could be you standing in the unemployment line, your checks running out and taking the next low pay no benefit job that comes your way.  I bet you would be singing a different tune then.

Background:
       I am someone who was raised in the south, currently obese, and yes I am a diabetic. I feel those remarks made derogatory and judgmental are far more white trash behavior than people that have no health care. I was always athletic and competed in riding eventers specializing in dressage, danced 9 years ballet/ point, camped and hiked, and worked SAR.... and more in good shape despite being a diabetic until a surgury for a bad injury changed my mobility for almost 9 years. Lack of insurence was not the problem behind my health issues as I have maintained insurrence my whole life. Mine was a bad medical system in the state of Pennsylvainia not a lack of insurance or funds. Bad surgeon and after care until I moved away to another state and then went through a year of physical rehab to get me off the cane and mobile again to repair the poor care I had. I have since lost 45 pounds and still counting. I am regaining my life back as much as possible and have never let any of this stop me from my goals in the dog world. I get out there bad leg and all and train my own dog from puppyhood on instead of getting already started or finished dogs. I have always had my own health insurance and paid my bills. I have a 21 year old son who still has insurence paid by me all of his life. I pay for all of my medical care and my insurence for our family of four. We have always kept an employer that offers excellent benefits that has at times led to us having to relocate but it was worth it for the benefits. At this time we live on one solid paycheck of my husband, I was doing mixed media art and jewelry since I can no longer physically do what I used to as employment but the economy has slowed customers to nil. I have NEVER been on disability nor any other assistance even though sometimes things are super tight. We have always been responsibile for ourselves. No one will hire me once they find out my medical limits with my leg even though I feel I still have much to offer employers. People look at you like the poster that mentioned overweight and diabetes and say those things and discriminate the person without finding out the facts of what kind of person that is before them and it is disgusting and rude.

 The health care changes as I see it:

   This is the open door to control penalty taxes for people who cost the health system. I have always paid my own way and am responsible for the level of medical care I get. I see this as affecting me by simple goverment control of now where funds where go for who it will care for. Our nation is filling up with elderly living longer and with many beng cared for long term that these new guidelines have been used in other countries to wean off the care and let nature take its course in the old and infirm as well as those with life long maintenance health issues such as diabetes. I will not get the care I enjoy now if the goverment takes over my health care instead of me being responsible for it as I have been. Look at the care offered for people in these circumstances in other countries with this system. Look at the care for those with cancer? My own father who worked his whole life in the military retiring well in rank and support of our country his whole life and was denied the cancer care private individuals get through private insurence by goverment medical care in the military hospital. He was retired and older, he became a number financially and was triaged. Goverment medical care will tell you your options of being confortable until you are gone, there will be no curing. This is a way to ease the country of social security issues as well with people living so long now. Some countries who have goverment medical care will not even let anyone overweight be cared for no matter how it came to be or let them move to their country like one country did when an English woman wished to move to their country to be with her husband because she was overweight, they denied her entry saying she would be a drain on their medical care!!

     Your parents and grandparents better hope they or you are privatly wealthy because this will follow other countries prior records for soylent green type thinking and they will be triaged instead of long term care and paying out social security money solving that systems issues the easy way.

      It will be the happy day for me when Obama is out of office!

Um, this is not government health care.

I wonder how many people who don't have insurance AND don't follow politics will react to this once confronted.

I mean determination of compliance and the "tax" will be enforced by the IRS I'm sure.

I also find it ironic that most heavy handed government enforcement and mandatory compliance actions have been directed toward the middle class like a cognitive dissonance.

It is not expected that the tax will be enforced.

I dunno Blitzen, they are raiding at gun point farmers selling RAW milk.

I'll say it again, I have no problem whatsoever subsidizing health care for those who cannot afford to pay their own way. However I do have a problem paying for health care for those healthy individuals who could work and won't or those who do not take personal responsibility for doing what they can to stay healthy.
