A few months ago I started a post for Smudge, at the time he was almost 19... Well sadly we had to let him go to kitty heaven today. This was not the way I wanted to spend Mothers Day with my mom!! He was my moms cat, FOR SURE...He followed her everywhere in the house, slept right under the covers with her every night...Although she has 2 other cats there is still that "empty" spot tonight.

Smudge was a awesome cat.... Loveing, very caring and yet fiesty up until the end. I am fairly sure, as well as the vet, that it was his kidneys that went. He lived a long and happy life... 19 isnt to bad in my book.

With a heavy heart and alot of tears we let him go..

R.I.P Smudge... We will miss you ole fiesty guy...

This is in March 2014...

This picture was taken March 2014 as well

...... and now some random pictures of him over the years....

So sorry to hear this news Jyl.

R.I.P. Smudge!!!

You were well loved and cared for. And, very handsome!

Our condolences to you and your Mom on the passing of Smudge, such a good long life he had!

We had one little fiesty rescue cat, all 6.5 lbs of her, named Minky, that lived to be 19 years & ~ 2 months of age before we had to let her go. She used to give a warning growl whenever the doorbell rang, guard kitty! It is tough to lose one you have had for so long...

RIP Smudge. Rose

Thanks! In the last picture with Smudge and the simese cat... the siamese is Daisy she lived until she was 23

You're welcome. :) That does not surprise me about Daisy, the oldest cats that came in to the clinics were usually Siamese...always independent!

Found an old picture of Minky for you, taken with my old Kodak 110 camera, ha ha. Most of her photos I still need to scan in to archive.  I think she is about 10 in this photo.

Smudge was a fighter up until the end. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer when he was about 1.5 years old. At that time the vet told us we would be lucky to have him another 6 months. Since he was so young at that time we decided to go ahead with some treatment. We did not do any surgery on him but did do Prednisone and I believe Lukeran(sp). He was put on a prescription diet.... He ate Science Diet prescription diet up until he passed away.... maybe that is why he lived so long.... he was preserved from all the preservatives in the Science Diet...lol.

Since he wasnt suppose to live past about 2 years old, I think he did pretty well..

I decided to "bump" this thread, even though I just posted it. It got moved to the OFF TOPIC section and no longer showed on the "Latest Topics"....

Here is another picture of Smudge in his favorite basket..

R.I.P Smudge.

He looks like a properly pampered (and handsome!) kitty who had a wonderful 19 years.  I'm so sorry for the hole he leaves behind, it's part of loving them and having the pleasure of their presence in our lives.

Thanks! He was a part of our life for almost 20 years... that is more than half my life. Our cats usually live a long time.... 15 to over 20 years is the average.. I had a almost solid white cat (her head and tail had calico coloring on it and her body was white) named Quibley that lived 15 years. Her and Smug would sleep right next to each other...they were know as "salt and pepper"...lol.

I've had cats all my life and most always they live to their upper teens but this past December I lost a 3 year old to HCM which was one of the most traumatic things.

Usually I can accept when my older furry companions have to leave me but that HCM loss is still haunting me even 6 months later.
