I am very new to the sport of Schutzhund...in fact I have not worked with my GSD in this venue at all yet. I have two questions ... well I have a thousand questions ....lol... but I will start with these.

#1 Can bite work give a young dog confidence? If so how?

#2 Can bite work give an aggressive dog more aggressive tendencies?

                                                   Thanks for your input.....        Ruger1

Your best bet is to find a Schutzhund club in your area and get your dog evaluated by an experienced trainer.  Sounds like there might be some underlying temperament issues going on with the dog based on your questions.  If the dog is fear aggressive or lacks social confidence the protection phase of Schutzhund would not be the best idea for the dog.  Again, go seek some experienced advice and more forward from there.

     dRiGon,

Thanks for the post....I have met with a trainer at the Schutzhund club in my area they suggested the bite work and so did the breeder. My male appears to me to be somewhat hostile toward people he does not know more so than my previous GSD. He is 5 months old and they believe he needs to build confidence....I wondered what others thought about using the bite work for that purpose. With this male I can not determine if he is being aggressive out of  fear or just being  territorial. Thats why I asked the question from both angles. I appreciate your advice and time.

                                                                 Thanks Ruger1

if a dog lacks confidence and is acting aggressively to those he doesn't know based on on his uncomfortable feeling  or outright fear from lack of confidence, you DO NOT teach him that he can control the situation by being more aggressive and biting.  You're just asking for trouble.  It's how you end up with a dog with a bite history, or worse.

If he's too uneasy around strangers he needs socialization and to experience new things and have good experiences, not bitework.  Bite work is for mentally strong dogs, and not every dog has it.
