Mindhunt

My 11 year old GSD has developed a dry crusty nose.  The vet says it is from exposure to the sun.  I have covered his nose in good holistic 30 block sunscreen (it is for babies) but he keeps getting crusty, mostly on the right side nare.  Vet says it is not an infection but I am wondering what it is.  I finally started moisturizing his nose with dog friendly moisturizer so if he licks it, it won't cause him problems.  I am wondering if anyone else has had issues similar to this.  We never had any problems in Michigan, even in the summer when he would sit outside for hours.  Down here in Florida, he goes outside for potty and walks in the early morning or late evening.  I don't leave him outside since he doesn't do well with the heat and humidity.

What does he eat? Could he have low thyroid? Has that been checked recently?

His thyroid functioning is fine.  His last senior panel that the vet did showed no issues.  He is on the same food that he has been on since he was a pup and the company itself has not changed USA vendors or the formula in any way.  He also gets the same supplements he has always gotten since he turned 6 in Michigan.  Same is true with his supplements, no changes in formula or ingredient vendors.  Sometimes he builds up some pretty gross crust on the right side that I have to clean out and it has thick gummy mucus.  The crust is a medium brown and his nose is very rough which the pictures don't show accurately.  No smell and it is not showing signs of infection. I am just baffled.

Good grief, I've only edited this thing 3 times, guess the long day is catching up with me lol

Has your vet scoped or looked inside the dogs nose? Wonder if he may have a cyst or tumor causing inflamation/irritation which would cause the nose to run, which then could cause the crusty build up you see.
Just a thought. Of course as they get older, allergies could be the problem.

Hmmm. Could it be nasodigital hyperkeratosis? Here's a good list (you may have seen it already) that covers lots of nose issues. http://dogaware.com/articles/wdjnoseandtoes.html

I was thinking, if you've tried everything else, maybe try cold sore/fever blister medicines, with l-lynsine? Also, eucalyptus oil, perhaps.

Yes! I've seen this with a few friends on Facebook this winter. I'll message them to see if they figured out what was causing the issue.

My dog had something like this and it's almost gone now after treating it with carmex several times a day for a month. For my dog, it was probably a dietary cause from cutting back on his food too far before rechecking the numbers. Some of his ratios were a bit off and some of his minerals were a bit iffy. Anyway, he was responding well to the carmex before I fixed his diet. As I'm a carmex addict, I'm always applying it, so I just apply it to him at the same time.

It can't hurt and it's a cheap and easy fix if it works.

Coconut oil topically and in his food...

My relatives 12 year old GSD/Lab Mix had this since we adopted her.  Vet said it was fine, but our groomer was concerned.  The groomer said some dogs get it from drinking/eating out of a plastic bowl.  To this day, I still am concerned about it.
