Hi everyone, I am in need of help. I have a female who supposed to welp in 3 weeks. I haven't seen any change in her abdominal area and her nipples don't seem to be filling with milk. Now I have a feeling she is pregnant but I am not completely sure. I am going to take her to the vet to see if she is pregnant. However her dam had the same complication. She was not showing and her nipples never filled with milk and believe me because I saw her and she did not look pregnant but on May 12 she had a healthy litter of 11 puppies. I have a feeling that my female is going through the same thing she did. Is there some kind of supplement I can give her at this moment 3 weeks before she is due that will insure that she produces milk? He dam only had two nipples that had milk and it was quite difficult to make sure all the pups were able to be fed. I don't know if this message is clear but basically my question is, is there any supplements I can give to my pregnant female that will insure that she produces milk?

Yes Royal Canin milk supplement is what is required. But feeding puppies is an art and needs to be mastered slowly. All the best.

Gimme I minute- you can try feeding dirty tripe it stinks but is excellent for milk production, how have you pregnancy? Could it be a phantom? They might or might not get milk with this..

Sasha will be going to the vet this weekend. The last time I took her the vet was not in. However, the funny thing is her mother went to the vet and the vet that she was not pregnant. But on May 12 2001 Sadee (Sasha's dam) gave birth to 11 puppies. I just hope the same doesn't happen with Sasha. Will this dirty tripe cause Sasha to lactate? Or do I feed it to the puppies when they are born? Where can I get this supplement?

Is this Sasha's first litter?? If it is, most often maiden bitches do not get milk until they actually start whelping... You need to do an ultrasound right away and find out for sure... I would be adding cottage cheese to her food or yogurt and she should be getting twice her normal rations... in my opinion it would be impossible to hide a large litter... unless the bitch is not getting enough food... our last litter was 12 and it was obvious and the poor girl was so uncomfortable and she was all puppy weight! All pups were big and healthy weighing in at at least 1lb!! It is only safe to do xray after 7 weeks gestation... How does your vet determine pregnancy if he missed the ball completely on that litter of 11?

by DKiah on 09 February 2005 - 14:02

Although I never let my girls eat all the afterbirths, I do usually let them get a few - it also helps stimulate milk production...

Gimme 1 - NO! No! not to the puppies! they must have a proper milk supplement Royal Canin is excellent, this you get at the vet.. Tripe can be given to the mother only..start giving it now... You should get it from your butcher make sure it is from a repuatble source, not a meat market, this could have boggies in it, where r u situated? Your vet shoudl be able to feel those pups now.. unless she has only 1/2 then it could be difficult if he is not experienced, 11 pups and he couldn't feel them, strange!!!Sounds like a suspect quack! How many days in whelp was she when you took her in for this check(The MOM)that is..

You don't mention if you have changed the bitch's diet yet. During the last trimester it's a good idea to switch her to Royal Canin Babydog. 3 weeks before whelping is still early - if there's nothing at the last week you should get concerned. However, I'd have her scanned asap to confirm that she's really pregnant. My penny's worth - my bitches lap up avo's as they fall off the trees and with the last one my problem was 8 puppies and enough milk for about 20! I still milked her out (and helped out a friend)in order to prevent mastitis.

Hey everyone thanks for the information. Yes Dkiah this is Sasha's first litter. With her mother I used the Canine Pregnancy test that can be found at schaferhund.com and it gives an exact date at which the pups are almond sized and the vet or an experienced person should be able to feel them and on that I took her to the vet. About the cottage cheese and yogurt, will my baby (Sasha) eat that? She hasn't been the type to me to like human food unless it is meat or meat sause. Also when her mother was pregnant fed her all she wanted I would try to make her eat I gave all kinds of meat like steak liver you name it I tried she just wouldn't gain weight. Sasha's mother had 11 healthy pups. I have pics of all them the day they came out and I still have it on the cam corder. But honestly the vet said she was not pregnant. I still had hope. She was bred Dec 29 the pups are due around Mar 3. I live in Texas so I should be able to find a pretty good butcher. Also I let Sasha's mother eat all the after to everyone of the pups. I figured if she didn't want anymore she would stop but thats apart of nature so I let nature take its course when it came to that. No I have not changed her diet quite yet. I was going to change it this week. I feed her Eukanuba adult food and I was going to switch her to Eukanuba puppy food. I will be taking her to the vet this weekend and I will have a ton of questions for her.
