There are many supplements out there for dogs, and I have to be careful of what I give to my dog. She has Pancreatic Insufficiency. I have tried quite a few supplements for my dog, and this one works well for her. Like people, every dog is different, and what works for one, might not be good for another. Last March, I started my dog on the NuPro Joint Support due to the fact that she is very active, and there are NO fillers, sugar, corn, wheat or by products. Alot of dogs are allergic to this. Her coat is nice and shiny, where as before it was brittle and dry, and you dogowners know what I am talking about with an animal that P.I. I also started out with a small amount at a time. www.nuprosupplements.com and if you have any questions or concerns they can be reached at 1-800-360-3300. I purchased my NuPro here in the Chicago area. The distributor is Hunde Platz, and they can be reached at 1-630-209-1511 (Pat), or fax 1-630-690-6922 (Karen). Dawn Bonome

The MOST important thing to do with a dog with a pancreatic enzyme insufficiency is to provide appropriate pancreatic enzyme supplementation in an amount enough to help the dog digest its' food. Additionally, keeping the dog on as low a fat diet as possible also helps considerably. This seems counterintuitive since these dogs are often extremely thin, but fat is hard to digest. I have many such dogs come through my GSD rescue program. I find that Royal Canin Maxi Light is well tolerated and I also can supplement with Vertex, low fat cottage cheese once in a while and other things to make the food palatable. Fortunately, most of the pancratic enzyme insufficiency products, such as Prozyme, are now affordable for the average person. Earlier manufacturers were charging a lot, and vets upped the prices to double or more. That led to many people being unable to afford to buy the medication the dog had to have. The most common other reason for a dry and brittle coat besides some sort of malabsorption problem would be thyroid problems. I do not know this NuPro product, but am glad you found something you feel helps the dog.

For those with dogs that have digestive problems I have found that a diet of plain meat...No veggies and sufficient bones works the best. Also, the product called FORCO is great too. Can find them at http://forco.com 5 lb bucket costs about $22.00 plus shipping and one only uses a tablespoon a day on top of food. And...If you have a dog that needs pancreatic enzymes the best and cheapest way to get it is as a nutritional suppliment and costs pennies compared to the stuff the vet wants to sell you. My vet told me to buy this stuff and it's the same breakdown as what he sells at a further mark up. It's made by the nutritional vitamin company called NOW. Simply called Pancreatin 4X-500 mg. I pay $23.00 US Dollars for the product. Here is the website but you can find it at Health Food Stores too. http://www.nowfoods.com/?action=itemdetail&item_id=3560 This information if from their website: Pancreatin is a preparation of porcine pancreatic enzymes. Pancreatin naturally contains protease (protein digesting), amylase (carbohydrate digesting), and lipase (fat digesting) enzymes. Nutrition Info Servings Per Container: 250 Serving Size: 1 capsule Amount Per Serving % Daily Value 4X Pancreatin 500 MG * Equivalent to 2000 mg Pancreatin typically supplying: Amylase 50,000 USP units Protease (Trypsin and Chymotrypsin) 50,000 USP units Lipase 9,000 USP units Birdy...

I forgot to mention that my dog is also on the Panacare Plus Powder. The food is moistened, and then sits for 20 minutes. I purchase the Panacare Plus Powder thru Omaha Vaccine with a Prescription from my Vet that is mailed in by me. If anyone is interested, Omaha Vaccine has an 800 number. 1-800-367-4444. The food I am feeding her is Burns Pet Nutrition Brown Rice and Chicken. The crude Protein in the food is 18.5%. Their web Address is www.bpn4u.com and their Toll free phone#1-877-983-9651. Also, for a little bit of meat taste she gets a few cubes of Steve's Real Meat Chicken. I also put Olewo in her food. She eats twice a day. She is doing fine with this. As I mentioned before, every animal is different. Dawn Bonome
