I rescued a dog who was in the K9 unit of the local Sheriff's dept. in Louisiana. I have been fighting a losing battle to collect his information from the Dept. After more than a month I was finally able to track down the name of the Veterinary clinic that services the K9 unit. They are mailing his vet records to me, but that is all I have to go on. He is a beautiful dog with great body conformation and a great temperament. His name is Tango, he has a strange tattoo in his right ear that I cannot descern (he doesn't sit still long enough for me to try to make out what it says). I am desperately trying to search for his history. The vet told me that he most likely came from out of state because the dept doesn't use local dogs. I am trying to track down his pedigree but all I have is his name, Tango. I've searched the database using just his name but it's like searching for a needle in a haystack. Please Help! If there is anything you can think of that will help me please post it!

See if you can speak to the person in the Dept that is in charge of purchasing the dogs...trainer or whoever. Find out if they have a regular vendor or what kennel the dog came from and call that kennel, if its in CONUS, and find out your dog's history. They may be able to tell you, they may not. The dog may have papers, it may not. Police agencies are not usually interested in pedigrees, they want working animals.
Is the dog a GSD or a Malinois? Why did the Dept get rid of it, do you know, and why are you so interested in getting his pedigree?

He is a GSD. I already did all of what you suggested. I have been calling them for almost two months and everytime I call they transfer me to a line that nobody EVER answers. I went to the dept. in person and, of course, either nobody seems to have a clue or they just don't care. I got the name of the commanding officer of the K9 unit, but nobody will give me a phone number or an email. They just say, "we'll have him call you". And no one ever does. They also never tell me where the K9 unit headquarters are so that I can go speak to someone in person. It was a nightmare just trying to get his medical records. I just want to know where he came from, if he has a pedigree, and who trained him. I want to know his ancestral history so I can see If i should be worried about hip problems, temperament issues, allergies, etc. I just want to know more about my dog. From what I understand, he was intended for the Narcotics division but failed because he was not agressive enough, or something like that.

How did you get him then?  It sounds like the unit got him as a green dog but he was not actually a working K9?

If you can get him to sit still long enough, the tattoo may help. Other than that, there's not much we can go on either, besides for you
to try and get in contact with the K9 guys, which you already have.

If he was purchased by a k-9 unit then his hips are done and in working shape. PD's don't purchase dogs without hip x-ray's.

Correct. He was green and never worked in the field outside of training. Since the tattoo is all I have to go on, I think I will try to read it and see if I can't find something

I acquired him from one of the Deputies. He did not get along with the other GSD's he had at home.

So he was never PD property. You will have to ask the guy you got him from

Take a close up pic of the tattoo while he is asleep :)
