Has anyone had to fix a upper cracked k9 tooth. My dog has a crack half way on his canine tooth and I don't want it pulled but fixed. Looking for ball park price to fix the tooth.

I had that unfortunate experience with my young male Dante about 3 months ago.

He broke his upper canine tooth on an aluminum crate while "arguing" with an airedale (you should see the crate door).

He was in a lot of pain, and the tooth bled for hours..
It was after hours at the vet.. and ER clinic couldn't really help, unless it wouldn't stop bleeding..

I researched all night long (was sick over the whole thing.. was worried his schutzhund days were over).

Bright and early in the morning, I called the specialist dentisit clinic I found online in my area, and got Dante in to them right away.

The specialist dentist vet was able to save the tooth, cap it, re-shape it, and seal it.
He also attended to four of Dante's other teeth.. one he broke as a pup, and had to have a root canal.. one was chipped on the very end, and he filled it at sealed it.... one small one needed to be removed, and one molar had some small damage that he was able to repair easily.

The whole thing was close to 3K.. NOT cheap, but totally worth it to me.

I learned a tremendous amount about dog teeth, and the vet debunked a lot of the myths I had been told over the years.

He also provided me with an amazing color photo detailed report showing EVERYTHING they did.. xrays, before and after...  exact diagnosis..
It was very professional!

In summary. if the tooth has just been injured, there is a 48 hour window to repair it, or it will likely die, and then need a root canal.
The root canal stabilizes the tooth, but the tooth is not as strong as if it were alive.

Removing the tooth is not the best way to go.. (because it is a big tooth)

I will attach a link to this dentist's web site... He explains it much better than I.

Thanks for the info. We got Argo about 4 months ago. My vet was the one who saw that he had a cracked tooth so i have no way to know when it happened. He doesn't do dental work so he is sending me to a vet in baton rouge. He goes next week, again thanks for your info and the link.

Good thing to do.

They will x-ray the teeth, and see how serious the damage is.

Hopefully, they can save your dog's tooth and not have to do the root canal..

Good luck!

Cost me $900 for root canal and a cap.

by LSU mom on 22 December 2011 - 12:12

900.00, that would be great. My husband will be told that the cost is around that price. If its more he really doesn't need to know. No point for both of us being sick about this.

Hi LSU MOM,

Ouch....unfortunately specialists are never cheap.

I know a lot of you don't believe in insuring your dogs but here is the perfect example of why it's actually a good idea. I insured Cisco at 10 weeks old with PetPlan's Gold Premium. My premium is $400 and some a year and so far it has paid for itself and then some. He goes into the dental specialist next week for some work and my bill was going to be $1500, fortunately the procedure is covered by PetPlan so I will only have out of pocket expenses of $500.

Good Luck with your dog, I hope all turns out well for you and your bill is not to painful.

Just had this happen to one of our young dogs.Took him in immediatley to our vet who referred us to a specialist. When the specialist took x-rays she found the tooth was mush inside the root. He must have cracked it without us knowing and over the few months it took to actually crack  all the way  off it had already decayed.

It would have cost us a couple of thousand to cap, but do to the circumstances she had to pull it to a tune of $1100.
After 3 weeks he was back on the sleeve. Although we are encountering other problems with training now, the tooth is not one of them.
