I would apreciate if somebody with experience in this sector could talk a little about the possibility to produce good Show Dogs with real guard spirit by the adition of some working line blood. I want to kwow about the risk of hip displasia, wich I thing will be decreased because of most dogs in the working sector normaly got a lower HDZ, and about the risk not have a complete mouth in the puppies. Is any other way to produce real hard dogs, able not to let anybody gets in the yard?. A guard function must be preserved in the breed! Health is also very important, remember to talk about hip displasia please. Lets produce beauty with temperament and good health!

<<>> Have seen many been there done that and end up with a basket full of shit. BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THE SHOW/WORKING BREEDING,VERY FEW HAVE SUCCESS. You want a nice structured G.S. with guard spirit etc. Then we breed to the show dogs that work to show dogs that work, not the ones that win ribbons. You take a stud and a good bitch with solid nerves, with strong work ethics, no health issues, V structure, KKL, SchH3 on both (not just a barely passing SchH1 at home field with Santa Claus Judge and club helper)and who's siblings on both the sire and dam that have the same qualities. For the working dogs you breed not the LGA's or BSP winners but the ones that have V structure, good temperament, social aggresion, fight drive, no health issues and normal prey drive not like the extreme prey/ball drive Malinois wannabe's we've created. Then over time you will have a Show dog and a sport dog that looks more similiar than the ones we have now. Problem is as I said before is we have developed the dogs to fit our fancy to the extremes. I don't think there are 2 types of shepherds Show/Work, we have created 4 types of shepherds. Show (too look pretty), Sport (to compete with), Work (Police, SAR) and the pet (Show/Sport/Work rejects). Uwe

This topic has been discussed may times. Many times there have been opinions from the obvious show and obvious working camps. Thank You Roger Ven Torres for pointing out a very good article on the topic. VHDOOSEK9 you ROCK! Your comments about our beloved breed were on the mark. Kyle

There is not but one German Shepherd dog,PERIOD. People crack me up when they say there are 2,3 even 4 different types, this is nonsense. The Shepherd of today is all but ruined by SV standards, yet we here in the go ole USofA continue to breed to whatever it is that is winning in the show ring. Half the dogs out there are a ghost of what they should be,and when people of today are talking bitework, what a joke.Stop and take a good look folks at what the dog of today looks like compared to say 40 or 50 years ago, some pretty drastic changes, one need not be a working dog or a show dog person to see it.If all of the people that claim to be so in love with the breed would stop breeding/buying or conforming to whatever happens to look good? in the show ring and start abiding by the original breed standard then we might get the dog of yesteryear back, untill such time you will continue to see dogs with narrow pin heads,no chest, don't even get me going with angulation,it is enough to make me sick to see some of the dogs out there claiming to be German Shepherds, ass ends that don't exisit, looking like bunny rabbits walking around on their hocks in some cases......and people really think this looks good? If we keep on in the direction this breed is going I shudder to think what my daughters will be breeding 30 or 40 years from now. Anyhow....... Best to all, Charlie

Charlie, Your post alone acknowledges the fact that there are several types of Shepherds. The Shepherd of today is not ruined by the SV or even the AKC standard, It's ruined because the SV breeders and the AKC breeders don't even follow their own standard, let alone the back yard breeders. If we follow the standard by the letter we would not have Shepherds looking and acting like what the Fancy of the day is. And yes there are different German Shepherds, when I can take a particular type and know what type to bred to to get undersize, pinhead, speedfreaks for top competition. Or do the same to get the roach back, Black and Mahogony Red coat for top show, then you have 2 different types of shepherds right there. Then I get a certain type I know to breed to a certain type to get dogs for Police or military, but will never excel in SchH or Show, you have a 3rd type of Shepherd. Now all I have said above is because of the EXTREMES that we have created several types of Shepherds. If we go back to the basics and get away from the extremes, you will have what you had many years ago, ONE type of German Shepherd. A German shepherd that can do SchH, Show, SAR, Police, Herding etc. One of the reasons the German Shepherd WAS the most used dog. uwe

My post acknowledges nothing other then the fact BECAUSE of people NOT conforming to the original breed standard we have as a whole, one breed of dog that is nowhere what it used to be. First and formost get rid of the AKC,they have done nothing for the breed but encourage people to breed shit dogs. We are not talking about acceptable colors here but more of the dogs exterior look and of course temperament or lack thereof.Ill stick to the DDR dogs myself, that is till they catch on and are ruined also. My entire point of my post is stated in the end of your last post..........Untill that is done we will go on the way things have been for the last 50years....How sad....

by VHDOOSEK9 on 03 October 2005 - 01:10

<<<,First and formost get rid of the AKC>>> That'll never hapen with the AKC having to register 140+ other breeds. And the AKC did not encourage anyone to do anything directly, they did allow anything that has papers to be bred with anything of the same breed that has papers to be bred and registered...... We'll I guess that would allow people to bred shit, I guess your right. Problem is breeders will breed what sells. If a roach back , black and red dog sells, they breed that. If a jello bodied hammerheaded empty head dog sells then they breed that. When the rare liver coat, which is an AKC recognized color, becomes popular then the breeders will breed for liver coats. IT'S POLITICS AND MONEY that drives all the shit breeders. The ones really trying to do something good with the German Shepherd are the minority and we will have a long uphill battle that I don't see being won anytime in my lifetime. Uwe
