MOTHER DOG EATING PUPS - Page 5

This maybe alittle off topic ??       What about a maltese that had 4 puppies and ate only part of one.Like the front leg at two days old,while the pup was still alive ..She went on to take care of the other three just fine.The one whose leg was chewed off was less then half the size of the other three.. Instinct ?? However sad..To breed again or not to breed her again???

Wazzup, I think that is a different issue from bitches eating whole litters of seemingly heathy pups. Obviously the maltese was not lacking in traits needed to "mother" pups or she would have finished off the litter. 

I have seen pups with serious issues over the years, "swimmers", megaesopagous, runts and a multitude of other issues that one can encounter. I have never had a dog "sense'  that a pup was defective and kill it. I do not mean to imply that it doesn't happen or that there is something wrong in the case you describe. In what you describe, I would assume it was the defect in the pup and give the bitch the benefit of the doubt since she proved to be a very good mother otherwise.

I was kinda hoping it was accidental..With the Maltese..I dont know if this is co-incidence or not ..Around the same time this thread started ,I got a call from a lady I sold  two female  puppies to.both gsd pups were bought with out the AKC as she just wanted them for pets.No breeding was her clear message from me to her and she stated she would not breed them.. dogs would be spayed..I have been duped a lot with this story..not any more. Any ways she called said the dog had twelve pups and ate six already.what should she do with the other six???She had to go to work and the teenage kids who had been handling them had to go to school..Well I was pretty mad she bred the dog so I was not going to be to much help to her.I told her to take the pups away while she was at work.wipe em and swipe em as i call it ,,to get them to pee and poop.while not with the mother..I was supposed to call her back or she call me ,,I never heard back from her..I will go through my records and see if I can find a phone # and call her after the holidays ..of course i will not mention this post to her !!! I might add I have never had a gsd eat their pups before..so it was not out of my female this problem she had arose.No finger pointing at me please.From what I gathered from our conversation there was a lot of commotion in the house hold and around the dog.. could be co-incidence..
