This is terrible, but dogs do natural instinct things and no way would she want to rear 16... she was probably distraught.
I would stay with them, keep her calm, and let her get settled down again after the trauma of having 16 puppies. I would want some-one with her and the pups 24 hrs per day for a while, and keep her calm and get her to allow the pups to suck from her. You will know when she has lost the "wild instinct and panic" and she is calmly looking after her puppies, and if it doesnt happen after say 4 days, I would be finding another bitch to rear your puppies if you can, rather than bottle feed them. I do hope that you get it sorted, let us know. Mo - Mascani.

Thats a lot of puppy's,
Did she eat live puppy's, or were they already dead?
There is alway's a reason why a dog will eat her young, including fear or stress. Have you taken her away from the pup's all together?
Have you tried to see if she will nurse now without eating them?
How did she handle her first litter?

correction, I guess I didn't read your post very well, it's hard to read.
She ate the first litter?
There must be more to this story.
Much to consider here.

Are you talking about a German shepherd dog? with 16 puppies?
by Uber Land on 07 November 2008 - 23:11
you don't breed her! this is not a breeding dog, take your losses, have her spayed and find a female that is suitable as a breeding dog. didn't this come up 6 months ago???
you need to muzzle her, and you must be present and make her nurse the remaining puppies, or take them away and hand raise them yourself.

Cole, I remember that. Thank God we got you through it. That was a very bad time. OP, never breed that bitch again. They aren't all meant to be moms.

You know what, if it wasn't for you, I don't think that I would have gotten through that. NNOLEN28, do you have a supplemental formula, really the pups are what are most important at this point. Please keep us advised. You can save these pups.
