 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horand von Grafrath
Born: 1895
SZ 1
"Horand embodied for the enthusiasts of that time the fulfillment of their fondest dreams. He was big for that period, between 24" and 24 1/2", even for the present day a good medium size, with powerful frame, beautiful lines, and a nobly formed head. Clean and sinewy in build, the entire dog was one live wire. His character was on a par with his exterior qualities; marvelous in his obedient fidelity to his master, and above all else, the straightforward nature of a gentleman with a boundless zest for living. Although untrained in puppy hood, nevertheless obedient to the slightest nod when at this master's side; but when left to himself, the maddest rascal, the wildest ruffian and incorrigible provoker of strife. Never idle, always on the go; well disposed to harmless people, but no cringer, mad about children and always in love. What could not have been the accomplishments of such a dog if we, at that time, had only had military or police service training? His faults were the failings of his upbringing, never of his stock. He suffered from a superfluity of unemployed energy, for he was in Heaven when someone was occupied with him and was then the most tractable of dog."
~Captain von Stephanitz Originator of the breed

Yeah, he is... first one registered.  Breeds evolve, how many breeds look exactly as they did 100 years ago?

Amazing how many of the working lines still look similar to Horand.

by owl01 on 18 January 2009 - 18:01

oh yes i quite agree, but surely it is taking things a bit far to call the animals which rather more resemble the original 'parasites?'
i have no argument to make at the moment because i don't understand why the one type dog is so much better than the other?

The arrogance of the Alsatianists to point to GERMAN dogs of the past, yet are totally BLIND to GERMAN dogs of the present. The Alsatianists will NOT show under a GERMAN Judge, because they know they have the wrong animal. The Alsatianists will NOT exhibit in GERMANY because they know they have the wrong animal. They breed, show and register their animals under the name GERMAN Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) - having SECURED from the Kennel Club the word ALSATIAN as part of the NAME of our breed here in the UK -  These Alsatianists need to support their breed even more fully, as an independent breed The Alsatian, and cease being parasites on the GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG.

Alsatianists should FULLY SUPPORT the SPLIT.

regarding the breed evolving,it is my understanding of evolution that the first major factor in evolution is natural selection-surely the dogs that went into Horand's ancestory evolved naturally into the shape best suited for the breed's natural abilities?

I wasnt going to join this debate, although I do agree with David.
What I want to know is owl01 what type are you refering to when you state 'rather more resemble the original'?

Surely it cant be the English which weighs anything from 40kg to 55kg can it?
The first breed survey in the UK in the 20's an average male weighed 26kg

Surely that arguement can be turned on it's head DP?  Germanics will not show under an English judge - does this mean they know they have an incorrect dog????????????????????????

I totally agree about the parasites owl01.

It's about correct conformation and temperament.  I think it's the KC that's really p'd people off... don't take it personally.  I'm sorry, I can't be bothered to explain further... it's always such an uphill struggle and it's never ending.  No excuse for not showing each other a little respect tho'.

Put your spell checker on have we David?? You have a missing word in there!!

Alsatianists should FULLY the SPLIT.
