I've imported several dogs, and have received export papers anywhere from one week to several months. I'm currently waiting on one that has taken over six months... I know these things usually take time, but I was curious, what's the longest you've waited on export papers?

Nine months. This was for a pup from a recently imported stud. The seller had the papers, but the previous owner hadn't signed them when he sold the dog overseas. Also, had to wait for DNA to be done, photo to be taken, etc. THEN of course, the litter had to be registered with AKC, THEN I could get the papers for my pup! :(

1 1/2 years...

When I Imported a dog from and with DDR Papers (Blue Papers)...It was as East Germany was being dissolved...The papers needed to be obtained...then transferred into SV (Pink Papers)...
I learned from this experience and always demand the papers as I receive the dog/puppy or before final payment...

@ Qman, wow that's crazy! That's such a long wait, I'm glad you finally got the papers though. That's a good rule to receive papers first, I might start doing that as well. I always get worried when it takes longer than a few months...

@ sunsilver, nine months is very long too! I understand that process can take forever, especially with the AKC. Sometimes their DNA testing has to be done multiple times before they can actually find the DNA :(

Yup, you got that right about the DNA! First sample got lost in the mail. Second sample was blank. Third time was the charm!

My current pup was conceived in Germany by an SV pink-papered pair. The american breeder I bought the pup from imported the pregnant female and that started the merry-go-round. It took about seven months for him to do the DNA tests, etc. before he could get the necessary paperwork to present to AKC so my pup could be registered. Took a while, but it all seems to have worked out for us.
